Does my chicken have fowl pox?

The only 1 chick left from the first 9 chicks to have fowl pox died today although it has recovered from fowl pox, its was lethargic and i guess its health was already too affected from the pox it experienced. Aside from that, i dont think my chicks are improving. Although its only been 3 days since ive been applying iodine, the fowl pox on chicks still kept growing. And thing is, rather than the black spots, its the huge pimple like bumps that are growing which is more severe. Ive had older chickens getting infected too but im less worried for them because many have also recovered but its a different story for the chicks.

This is currently what one of my chicks look like. It has grown over his beak first and it has gotten bigger ever since ( its beak got dirty because it flew off while i was trying to grab its sibling and it was raining hard yesterday so it had scratched for sometime and i had to chase him after lol) but despite the big bump on his beak, its still very healthy so im kinda worried if i see him the next day being lethargic. It has also grown something near its comb and its also getting bigger. I started last thrusday applying iodine on him so its almost been 1 week now.

I have also counted and i have 17 chicks who are currently having fowl pox right now With some that doesnt really have high chances of living. Perhaps is there any signs that fowl pox is getting better?

It’s really tough to say if it looks better at this point. Some of the pox are really stubborn and take awhile to finally shrivel and fall off. Your baby chicks definitely have a nasty case of it, I’m so sorry! I think the worst part is how slow the virus is…it feels like they’ll never get better. Make sure they stay warm and dry and get lots of added vitamins to their water. I know some people might not feel the need to do this, but I started all my chickens on a all around type antibiotic just in case the pox triggered some other infections that made things even tougher for them. Amoxicillin or similar might help, I don’t know. Scrambled eggs with Greek yogurt and Nutridrench mixed in them is a good hearty treat when they’re immune systems are working over time. Poor babies! And poor you! It’s so stressful 😢❤️

I also have 3 broody hens right now and they are bound to hatch in the coming 2 weeks. I also have 2 hens that are currently laying and im thinking that i should not hatch some chicks for a while to stop the fowl pox cycle but my mind is still in dilemma

Yeah if there is a way to isolate momma hen and new hatched babies from the flock for awhile that would be ideal. I don’t think fowl pox lives terribly long in the soil after they shed their scabs…but 2 weeks isn’t likely long enough to be safe. Do your birds free range or have an enclosed run? Mine are enclosed in a run so I added First Saturday Lime and then straw and pine shavings to dry out the soil as much as possible—which makes the soil a tougher breeding ground for bacteria and viral growth. If you can keep new chicks and momma hens away from your common areas they may have a chance if they have to be outside. So sorry you have to deal with this! It sucks!

I free range my chickens in a wide area so any scabs could fall anywhere. They also could access any place around our home so wherever I put my hens with her chicks, they could always meet and be close at anytime. But I'm currently planning to have an enclosed run using chicken/garden net and I'm planning to put all chicks there Im planning of containing all chicks with fowl pox in an area becuase they are just the ones having it. Only one adult chicken have some scabs (The rest i have observed scabs too last month and they're gone now so i guess they have recovered). Im planning to get it done next week just in time to sanitize and clean everything so the new chicks will less likely be infected.

Sounds like a great plan! Gives you a bit of time to recover too ❤️

I can't say whether it's better or not either.
The lesions can take several weeks to resolve. Hopefully the chick won't end up with Wet Form.

Looks like @kurby22 has given some great suggestions.

Thank you for the update and photo, I do hope most of the chicks are able to overcome this.
