Does this make me cold hearted and evil?

So if a mod posts on a thread they are not allowed to moderate it? Huh. You learn something new on here every day.

I'm not touching the original post as I am very much a city girl. My neighbors already laugh at me enough. I don't need thousands in cyberspace doing the same.

yotetrapper, it isn't so much what you said as how you said it. It came across as smugly superior to others who are much more attached to their birds.

I will cull as needed and I do shed tears as I dig the hole and bury them. My preferred term for my chickens is "working pets". They are not quite like the dog or cat who sleep on my feet at night, but they are solace after a hard day's work and I do care for them and appreciate their very distinct personalities. If I had hundreds, it wouldn't be so. I have 24 chickens and 4 ducks so I have the luxury of getting to know each one.

It would never occur to me to publicly attack you for your emotional distance from your birds any more than I would publicly attack someone who is wrapped up in their birds.

No, we have no hard set rule, but in the interest of fairness, we try not to moderate threads that we are participating in. Sometimes, it's necessary, but we don't like to do that. We don't like folks to think that if a thread we have posted in was closed that it was just because we didn't personally agree with the OP or whoever. We don't do that on this Staff.

I don't think anyone is coldhearted. BYC is for a chicken in EVERY yard, so there are opinions for both sides and on the fence. It's just hard to interpret where others are coming from because we see the text, not their faces and we can't hear that tone. Just one of the parts of communication lost through digital talk

Edited: Idon't think its coldhearted to not cry, or to not care. It IS to laugh....

What's the difference? They're both animals, both have intelligence. At least, I get something back from my chickens that I don't from my dog (eggs). Both show affection--yes, chickens do show affection. You may eat your chickens, but some cultures raise dogs for food, too.
Sneering at the attitudes of others here who may have a different type of relationship with their birds or animals in general is a good way to get some real negative attention. I have nothing against folks who keep chickens for livestock and never pick them up or pet them or have any relationship other than throwing them in some food and clean water on occasion, but for me to manage my flock that way would kill my enjoyment of a very pleasurable hobby to me. I think a bit of "live and let live" is called for here.

Now THAT is a voice of reason!

Yup, agreed.

I wouldn't. There is always someone who will disagree. I was brought up on a farm as a kid and everything had it's purpose. In no way was I ever mean to the animals because that too is how I was brought up. However if an animal was sick or injured beyound normal recovery then my father would put it out of it's misery. I like my animals that I currently have, including my chickens but I also see their real purpose. I too get a laugh from some of the things people will do. Doesn't mean no compassion, it's just a different up bringing.

I bought DUEL PURPOSE birds for a reason and that reason is for eggs and then meat simple enough I view them as livestock some people however get to attached to their birds when they are young yes you can rehome older chickens.
As for commenting on this subject I feel if you buy them as a pet then so be it you buy a dog to be a pet but when people place "oh my dear chicken" post's on here simply enough don't read them or comment to them if you want to chuckle that's fine I do as well to some of the post but I don't post the lol smileys saying you need to get a life it is a chicken nothing more, I post a nice comforting comment to the them and try to think how they must feel even though I don't feel this way cause of the country lifestyle but they don't feel the same way as I do they feel like they have just lost a child and in some sort of way they have they lost an adopeted child that they have raised from birth they have fed it and watered it and nursed it if it has been sick so yeah they are their children, should we make fun of them for it no I don't belive any of us should.

Now does this make any of us cold hearted and evil, not in my eyes, however if you choose to post something like laughing at them and telling them to get a life it is only a chicken/livestock then I would say no your not cold hearted and evil you are just an a** is all, these folks are pouring out their feelings and hurt on to this forum for others to share is all they are doing.

I'm sorry but these are my views on this subject as well as MHO

I'm not a city slicker so no one should assume that just because I keep my flock as pets that I can't do what has to be done, that I can't butcher a rowdy rooster, etc. I think I am not alone in that, either.

My grandfather lived to be 100 years old and I spent many weeks on his farm from the time I was a baby until I was married at 19. He plowed with a mule and raised chickens and hogs and black Angus cattle, so I was around livestock, watched hogs being butchered, etc. I didn't really have much affinity for chickens until I became interested in some for myself as an adult, but I enjoy having them as pets and would not get the kick out of having a bunch of anonymous chickens as mere food providers as I do with my affectionate pets.

I don't "laugh" at the person, although I have yelled at the screen before. I just close the thread because I know I will say something stupid and get my self in trouble.

I also don't get overly attached to the birds - although I love to sit outside and watch them, cause they are funny and it's entertaining and relaxing. But, I butcher my extras and if one dies for some reason or another, I record the death in my chicken log and then they go to the muck pile.

I do wish people would research though, it does bug me when I see posts about "it's day 21 and my chicks are hatching what do I feed them?" Honestly? You had 21 days to google it?!?!

Now I'll

Oh geez come on guys, ya'll are totally misrepresenting what I meant. It's not like, oh hahahahaha their chicken died and now they're crying. Thats not what I meant at all. It's more like, haha they're taking a chicken to a vet??? or LOL this person is taking a sick chicken to WORK? It's more of an incredulous chuckle than a "I'm laughing because you're in pain."

hey yotetrapper I grew up dealing with 50,000 chickens at a time X3 ,and on top of that we had egg layers and pigs and goats and cattle .it is mainly the differance between a pet owner and someone who does not have the time to take a chicken to a vet but has a number of other animals depending on them for food and such . I trap for a number of farms here where I live I get rid of predators for folks keep their poultry and fowl safe I have been trapping since I was 10 going on 11 me killing a fox is not something I think twice about . it is like a fly or rat to me. the post's that I open that are concerning pet owners I just move on from I ussally cannot offer any advice they are going to listen to anyway .the only part that really bothers me is when poultry is deformed from birth and folks keep them and end up letting the poultry breed that is kina sad . pet owners are much different then folks that do it for a living. C'est la vie
