What's the difference? They're both animals, both have intelligence. At least, I get something back from my chickens that I don't from my dog (eggs). Both show affection--yes, chickens do show affection. You may eat your chickens, but some cultures raise dogs for food, too.
Sneering at the attitudes of others here who may have a different type of relationship with their birds or animals in general is a good way to get some real negative attention. I have nothing against folks who keep chickens for livestock and never pick them up or pet them or have any relationship other than throwing them in some food and clean water on occasion, but for me to manage my flock that way would kill my enjoyment of a very pleasurable hobby to me. I think a bit of "live and let live" is called for here.

Now THAT is a voice of reason!
Yup, agreed.
I wouldn't. There is always someone who will disagree. I was brought up on a farm as a kid and everything had it's purpose. In no way was I ever mean to the animals because that too is how I was brought up. However if an animal was sick or injured beyound normal recovery then my father would put it out of it's misery. I like my animals that I currently have, including my chickens but I also see their real purpose. I too get a laugh from some of the things people will do. Doesn't mean no compassion, it's just a different up bringing.
