Both of my dogs are mutts. The worst offender is a lab, weimaraner, chow, and god knows what. The other is a border collie, aussie, coyote mix. Both are rescues with issues. We do our best with them, but...well we really do try. While the instinct is there for both of them to eat the chickens, I have made them so fearful of them - they do not try. They will tell me when it is time to put them to bed (when I space it) and if something is not right - like an escapee. It took much time to get them to behave, but they did and are fantastic chicken guards now. If the eagles, osprey, or hawks are circling....they now bark like demons. They do look at the babies like it would be a fantastic snack, but shy away when one is near. While your dog is a chicken killer at the moment - with enough "chicken torture"....your dog may become a great protector. I just made it a point to hold the birds, get the dogs close enough, made sure that they knew that the chickens belonged here (wing flapping, loud cackles, pecking, etc - the chickens, not me). I got my point across. Did the same with my 'bird slayer' cats too. I am so sorry about your roo! No matter what the cause of death was....it is hard to loose any chicken baby (full grown or not).

I knew coco (my chicken attacker) has always had a liking her brother is ok and supervised ok hopefully with more work at least one of them would guard and protect them because we have every chicken predator possible where I live they can get within 10 foot of the coop but that's it thanks to the invisible fence but I would like to be able to let the chickens roam the 4 acres we have in peace and everyone live happily ever after lol hopefully this spring when me and the kids are outside all day we can make some progress but I've heard that once a dog gets a taste its pretty hard to break I mean who doesn't like chicken I guess we will see but the dogs were here first and I LOVE my chickens they are so much fun for me and my kids we haven't had chickens but a couple months hopefully she will get used to having them fingers crossed

poor doggy, its their nature, but i will say my dog did this ONCE. i beat her ... and she wont even look at them now. i didnt want to do that but i did and it worked. i was training her to help me round them up and i guess i didnt know how much she was enjoying herself

Just to be clear, no professional dog trainer would ever beat a dog. It is well known this is not an effective method of training a dog.

no, i agree its not. its cruelty to animals i lost my temper, she had the hen in her mouth and refused to let it go. she listens better than any dog i ever had and she knew better. she was being defiant.she had tunnel vision at that moment and was turning on me as well. i have never hit this dog before as you can tell her something one time and thats the end of it, just not this time. i am not a professional trainer, i just seen my chicken being killed and i stopped it.

I don't think you were condoning animal abuse at all I'm pretty sure we all love our animals like our own children. Some people don't believe in spanking their kids some do I personally don't feel a smack on the nose and firm no is abusive and I'm pretty sure if any one of us saw one of our chickens in our dogs mouth we would come to its rescue not say oh shucks can't smack my dog that's abuse. I think the word beat people may take wrong I knew exactly what you were saying.
