My hen was bit by my dog on the butt and from what I could tell it just looked like my dog only got a mouth full of feathers. That was true until about a week ago when I went out to the coop and el Tigre had blood all over her beak and bottom. Needless to say she has been pecking at it. After further examination there was a small tooth hole right on the inside of her bottom. I've been cleaning it about every other day and putting antibiotic ointment on it. Up until a day ago I thought it was working and then I started noticing a smell that was not normal. Is there a antibiotic or a less expensive treatment I can do myself? Do they make a cone for chickens to put around there neck so they don't keep pecking at themselves? Any help would be great. Thank you.

Hi &

. I'm sorry you have a injured chicken. I would flush it good with peroxide and then put neosporin on it. She should be put on antibiotics which can be put in her water. You should re-post this in the Raising Backyard Chickens forum in the drop down Emergencies, Diseases/ injuries and cures thread. Good Luck.

Peroxide can burn healthy tissue as well as drive pus deeper into a wound. You could flush with a saline solution - since it's a puncture wound it sounds like it is infected. Can you call a vet and see if he would prescribe something or maybe you have a feed store that sells something you could use. I wouldn't know what antibiotic or the dosage. Please keep the dog away from the chickens - they can't defend themselves.

Thank you for some of the helpful comments. El Tigre is doing much better now. After putting antibiotics in her water, cleaning out the wound and then applying this purple, grape smelling anti pecking goo she is getting back to her normal self.
