I go back and forth about which I will get next. I love my Stoli, so I'd love to get another Newfy. But I'd also like to get a Pyrenees. Where I get caught up is replacing my baby with one of the same breed fully knowing she can't be replaced. Does that make sense?

That makes perfect sense!! I felt the same way for a while after our Lab died. And I still feel the same way about getting another Pyrenees mix after Gator.

Actually, I don’t even think I want to get a Black Lab because it would look too much like him. :(

He looked basically like a giant Lab except with some white on his chest and a tiny bit on his chin and toes. He had little white toes lol and a curly tail but basically looked like a giant Lab so I think a black Lab would be too sad. :(

So I get it. Pyrenees are great dogs. Always wanted a full one but soooo much hair and also the independent streak lol

Have you considered Leonbergers? They are great dogs and may be similar to Newfies but without replacing her haha

Plus they have DRY MOUTHS which is a major plus over both the Newfies and Pyrs LOL

That totally makes sense. I have a golden who has been declared the best dog in the world. No one ever seems to argue this, even if they have dogs of their own, so I stick with it. The companion we adopted that lives with her is not of the same breed. When she passes, I don't know if I can/will get another golden because none will compare, even though I feel I must always have a golden in my life. We'll see. I figure we have about 2 years to figure it out the way our lives are going.
Yes, that's exactly it. I feel like your brain can't help but compare one to another. But maybe it's not as bad as I feel like it may be? I would like to get one before Stoli goes, so that she can teach the pup. I'm sure that would help.

How old is your golden? She sounds lovely.

We had an Irish Setter who had the best personality. Big red goofball that was so gentle and loving. I am not sure we will ever have another one.
I would love to have another Husky - I loved mine so much! But, they are a handful and love to run. We will have to fence our 25 acres before getting a husky.
I would like to get a Greater Swiss Mountain Dog. I hear they are great farm dogs and that is what I want right now.

I spend idle hours looking at various dog rescue sites. I want to bring any/all of the medium to large dogs home with me if they look friendly in their photo or somehow remind me of a dog I've had in the past. Any animal someone else doesn't want is the one I want. I got the dog that was returned to the shelter, the last cat in the litter that was around weeks after others had homes, the kitten the adopter backed out on when I was jokingly on the non-existent "wait list."

:lau I do the same thing! That and Craigslist. Rescues are great. :love

Our first dog and cat were rescues

Great Pyrenees, Husky or a German Shepherd.
I want a big dog that would protect our livestock and farm. Maybe in the far future. A Husky would probably not fit that role but they are so pretty.

I love all those breeds. :love

Goldens are fantastic dogs!!! I really want one.

Oh, but there's this promise that was made that my husband gets to pick the next dog. I'm not sure how that will go down.

Maybe you can both agree on something. :fl

I have had more than one golden, but this dog is something special. (They all are, but man, this one takes the cake.) She is currently 14 and a half on pace to live forever apparently. We are expecting a baby and have a second dog that doesn't play well with all other dogs, so when she passes I don't think we'll be adopting a pup quickly, but I do see another dog in our future at some point, it's just gonna take a few years. Just typing this makes me realize that in our family situation another golden is going to be a great fit, it will tolerate a toddler and will tolerate another dog that isn't so happy go lucky, soooo... we'll see how it plays out.

Honestly as much as I dream about other dogs, I don't miss having a puppy. Do your dog dreams involve puppies or adult dogs? There's something really nice about living with trained adult dogs that I'm not ready to give up. I meet other people's puppies and they are adorable, but it never makes me want to get one these days.

I agree, it would be tough if they looked alike :( I have looked at Leonbergers! They're beautiful dogs. I lucked out with Stoli as she's not much of a drooler. :p

Your setter sounds amazing. :love I love the sporting breeds! We’ve only ever had retrievers or retriever mixes but I’ve always wanted a spaniel or pointer or setter or something like that. My dad has two Setters as a kid and loved them. Not sure what kind though. I think they were English but they may have had an Irish at one point too.

I love huskies but they can definitely be a handful haha and not sure they’d be the best choice with our cat and chickens. Though the chickens are fenced in.

Greater Swiss are nice dogs!! I’ve always wanted a Bernese but there’s so many health problems and such short lifespans. :( Greater Swiss seem like a better option. And no hair haha I think they are related. I think there are 4 different breeds of the Swiss mountain dogs, all different sizes and stuff but I think all related. They are nice dogs. I think the Greater is a bit more protective than some of the other breeds but still a great dog and that may be better for a farm dog anyway.

Yeah, I think if I got one maybe I would get a yellow haha but I think I want a Golden anyway. Although I’m between Aussie and Golden and lately some other ones have popped up again that I’d considered before but thought I ruled out. Now not so sure. :lau like Border Collie or a spaniel like a Brittany or English Springer. Or a poodle lol

They really are!! I love them so much but I think they are wayyyyyyy too big and way too much hair for me at the moment lol but maybe eventually!!

And oh wow that really is lucky!!! I always heard they were huge droolers haha

Oh, that's too funny. I always tell people I wish I could skip the puppy stage! They are so darn cute, but lordy they're a lot of work. Just getting them to the point where they can be left alone with our mass of other animals (and be trusted) and not escape... Our youngest is getting an English Lab in about a month, so I can have all the puppy loves I want and then he can take her home :)

14.5 is great! Still getting along well, even better. I'm sorry...is she a retriever? I've heard other people call yellow labs goldens, or golden-doodles goldens.

I am having a mixed feelings on what type of dog I want next... I'm really looking into getting a standard poodle. They're so smart.

I know that they require a lot of maintenance with grooming and brushing and such, but Jolene is the same way.

I already have my four dogs which you already know and I love them all to pieces. I'm about to groom jolene right now.

I'll take before and after pics and post them on this thread :D
