I have had more than one golden, but this dog is something special. (They all are, but man, this one takes the cake.) She is currently 14 and a half on pace to live forever apparently. We are expecting a baby and have a second dog that doesn't play well with all other dogs, so when she passes I don't think we'll be adopting a pup quickly, but I do see another dog in our future at some point, it's just gonna take a few years. Just typing this makes me realize that in our family situation another golden is going to be a great fit, it will tolerate a toddler and will tolerate another dog that isn't so happy go lucky, soooo... we'll see how it plays out.

Honestly as much as I dream about other dogs, I don't miss having a puppy. Do your dog dreams involve puppies or adult dogs? There's something really nice about living with trained adult dogs that I'm not ready to give up. I meet other people's puppies and they are adorable, but it never makes me want to get one these days.

Your Golden sounds amazing. :love

And I know what you mean about puppies versus adults. Personally I love training so I think I would love a puppy and love being able to train it my own way from the beginning but it’s also super rewarding, perhaps more so, to take an adult or adolescent dog who knows nothing and make them into a well behaved companion. :love

There’s tons of those kinds of dogs in shelters and on Craigslist. People dump them as adolescents and usually they just need more exercise and a bit of training and they can be great dogs. :love

But it’s also nice acquiring an already trained adult dog and those exist too.

Having a trained dog is definitely nice and I’ve also considered rescuing an older but still young dog but I do love puppies. Idk yet.

My dreams involve both. :lau

But then again they also involve having a sled dog team soooo.... maybe not the most realistic. :lau

Oh, that's too funny. I always tell people I wish I could skip the puppy stage! They are so darn cute, but lordy they're a lot of work. Just getting them to the point where they can be left alone with our mass of other animals (and be trusted) and not escape... Our youngest is getting an English Lab in about a month, so I can have all the puppy loves I want and then he can take her home :)

14.5 is great! Still getting along well, even better. I'm sorry...is she a retriever? I've heard other people call yellow labs goldens, or golden-doodles goldens.

Puppies are definitely a ton of work but I love the work and love training and everything so it’s fun to me. I might be a bit insane :lau

I am having a mixed feelings on what type of dog I want next... I'm really looking into getting a standard poodle. They're so smart.

I know that they require a lot of maintenance with grooming and brushing and such, but Jolene is the same way.

I already have my four dogs which you already know and I love them all to pieces. I'm about to groom jolene right now.

I'll take before and after pics and post them on this thread :D

Poodles are really nice dogs!! I’m really starting to lean towards them more and more. There is definitely something to be said for the not shedding. :lau

And honestly I feel like having to brush/comb out a fluffy dog daily or even weekly is way more work than just shaving them down every month or two. :lau

Surely we all must dream about various dog breeds and all the dogs we would have if we could, right? That might just be me. :lau

But I know that for me personally, I am always researching and dreaming about dog breeds and if I could have every breed of dog, I probably would. :lau

I want practically every breed.

And every time I think I have it narrowed down, another breed pops up that I want. :lau

Surely some of you must be similar.

So....

What dog breed(s) do you really want? Which ones would you have if you could?? Or maybe you already have your dream dog but want another? Maybe you just want more dogs?

Personally I would probably have about a million dogs if I could. :lau

This thread is for all things dog dreaming!! :D

I probably won’t actually get a million dogs or all the breeds I want but we can dream. :D

You & I have similar dreams! :highfive:

I lost one of my big dogs last August, and we've been debating getting a second dog ever since. Mine were Greater Swiss Mountain Dog / Great Pyr. mixes. I lost one at 12.5 and the remaining guy is 8. He tore a ligament in his knee in a run in several years ago with a black bear. He's a great LGD but his leg gets sore pretty quickly now.

One of my guys was all Greater Swiss personality, and the other is all Pyr -

As for Pyr... yes, big shedders!

As for the future - one will definitely be a Greater Swiss, the second will either by an Anatolian or a Kuvasz. The Swissy is such a great working dog, and I want a true LGD as well. The misses really want a Dane (we are big dog people!)

I go back and forth about which I will get next. I love my Stoli, so I'd love to get another Newfy. But I'd also like to get a Pyrenees. Where I get caught up is replacing my baby with one of the same breed fully knowing she can't be replaced. Does that make sense?
Perfect sense; I'm that way with my Belgian Shepherd, Kano, so... I wait patiently with my flocks of Quackers and Cluckers for the next Puppy Love to come along and chain my heart.

I've always wanted a great dane, but there lifespan has deterred me. Such beautiful dogs, though. So are those greater swiss! Have never met one in person.

The breeder that we got our Irish Setter from has a team of them that she runs as sled dogs. She entered a couple of races, but her Irish Setters are so friendly that they run faster when they hear the cheers at the finish line but stop for pets before getting across the line, lol. They are fast though.

DH & my 1st 'married' dog was a Boxer/Irish Setter mix. He was the funniest, naughtiest, most loveable dog that ever walked the planet. He was a beautiful brindle color like his mama & he had a long tail that would curl into a question mark whenever he was exploring something. That dog was 120% personality plus, but the energy level ran at about 150%. Definitely not a sloth dog like the Pugs I have right now. (Not bagging on Pugs at all, I adore them!) :love

Sometimes it's best when it happens that way. That's kind of how we got Chick, our little heeler. My brother in laws stud fee was pick of the litter, but he didn't want another dog. I didn't want a pup and my husband did. Haven't regretted her for a minute! She's my baby :p

Do you still have Kano?

Glad it’s not just me :lau :D

Oh wow that is awesome!!! And hilarious that they have to stop to greet people :lau

There was a team of poodles that completed the Iditarod several times. I think it was in the 80s or 90s. They may have had huskies on the team too though but still cool.

Your dogs sound amazing!! Sorry you lost one. :( I lost my Pyr mix last year too but a few months after yours. Always hard losing them. Mine was only 6 1/2 :(

And yes, Gator shed sooooo much haha but that could have partly been because of the Lab. Labs are the biggest shedders ever, I swear. Our yellow always shed tons too.

We love big dogs too!!! I used to think I would never get a little dog but now I eventually want some of the little breeds too :lau

But I love the big dogs. More huggable and you don’t risk squishing them LOL

Gator was like 140 pounds haha

Perfect sense; I'm that way with my Belgian Shepherd, Kano, so... I wait patiently with my flocks of Quackers and Cluckers for the next Puppy Love to come along and chain my heart.

Belgian Shepherds are awesome dogs. :love what kind is yours?

And I’m jealous of your ducks LOL always wanted them but my dad hates them.

Yeah, the lifespan is sad. :( Bernese Mountain Dogs are the same way cause they get a lot of cancer and stuff so a lot of them only live to 8 or 9 and getting to 10 is considered good :(

The Swiss dogs really are beautiful. :love

I really really want a Berger Blanc Suisse (White Swiss Shepherd) one day haha
