Oh wow that’s really rare, I’ve heard people talk about it in some of the common large breed dogs, bullies, GSDs, Goldens, but never knew one to actually have it. That’s a really bad beat in poker terms.

Yeah, we had never heard of it before until he got it.

Depending on the dog most are good up until 5-6 years of age, than I start keeping an eye on their teeth. Each one is different. Some I do once in their lives, and they are good, and others need it yearly. I teach all my pups to tolerate me looking in their mouths. I should probably brush but I haven't had the patience for that yet, but it's always in my mind to try it and see if it helps.

I use a dental gel that you just squirt on the teeth. As soon as I get my dogs they all start getting gelled each night before bed. Not as good as toothbrushing and obviously not the same as a deep cleaning at the vet's, but it does seem to help slow the growth of tartar. None of my current dogs have needed veterinary cleanings yet.

Little dogs do seem to need a lot more dental maintenance vs bigger ones, just not a lot of room for teeth in little dogs so they get crowded in there. I had a Papillon that only had 3 teeth when she passed, even with regular dental cleanings she just kept getting tartar and losing teeth.

So many possibilities! Realistically I think we will end up with an Australian Shepherd mix from a ranch/working parents.

When I was a kid, I always thought I would like a cocker spaniel. We ended up with a Yorkie. Quietest Yorkie ever! What a great little dog she was. Right now I have a Papipoo (papillon/poodle). She hovers just under 10lbs. She is a bit yappy but a good dancer. We also have German Shepherd who is not as smart and trainable as we were lead to believe. We have had border collies in the past and they were great! Wouldn't mind getting another one or an aussie. Oh, and I would love to have a Sheltie.

Yes, she is very cute. She is black and white and her name is Pepper. She is Pepper the Papipoo puppy! Ok, she is not a puppy anymore but often acts like one.
