Dog got in pen.... HELP PLEASE!!!!! PICS

This is a classic case that NEEDS antibiotics. Get some on that wound and in that hen if you intend to nurse her to health. To do so in my mind is irresponsible.

You may also want to look into giving something for the pain, baby aspirin might do the trick.

Whew! Information overload!!

Alright, I am going to Walmart to get some Nexcare (I didn't even know what that was!

) (so just spray this stuff all over her? or just her broken wing??)
And then to the feed store to get Terrmycin (assuming this is an antibiotic? not sure how to give it to her) and Vi-Tal.

Then I'm making the special diet mix... I have all that stuff here at home. I can't imagine she'll actually eat that... but I'll certainly try.

And about her broken wing.... didn't get any advice on that. I don't know what to do about it.

Thanks again!

Yes terramycin is a antibiotic. I believe the dosage is 1 tsp to 1 quart of water. I don't think the nexcare will help the wing unless it is missing feather's like her back. I would spray it all over the injured part of her back.

About the wing........ The only thing I know for you to do about that is maybe take a ace bandage and wrap it around the wing and secure the wing close to the body. So wrap the wing a couple of time and then go around the chickens body so that the wing is not just hanging there and maybe it will heal.

Goodluck!!

The wing has bone showing... and it's sort of just hanging there...

I am affraid to wrap it/her because I think the wounds should beable to air out to heal. I hate to have to wrap her/unwrap her/etc... that would be so uncomfortable and painful for the sweet girl.

Wish I could just take her to a vet and have them take care of her! My vet would think I've lost it though. And not sure I'd want to see the bill afterwards. lol.

Well if the wing has bone showing then I would put the nexcare on it. As for wraping it. Maybe you could make some sort of sling to hold it up, but at the same time leave the wound opened where you can still doctor it. You might be able to cut a pair of pantyhose and make a sling out of it.....

......anything is worth trying, right?

A dog tore up the back of one of our Silkies. I loosely sutured the skin back together, slapped on a couple butterflies for good measure, and kept it moist with an anti-bacterial ointment. She lived in our bathroom for a couple weeks. Now she's got a bald spot, but otherwise seems fine. I don't know what to tell you about the broken wing.

Thanks for posting those pics. That is very much what Pinky Pie looks like, except it covers her entire back. I'll have to show them to my husband and see what he thinks, if we will beable to stitch her up like that. I'm 8 months pregnant and not sure I can handle that right now...

You did a great job doctoring her!

I agree, i'm afraid I think the kindest thing to do would be to put her to sleep if she has broken bones too. It might be very hard for your daughter, but sometimes things like this are a good life lesson in accepting that the right thing to do isn't always the easiest. Sorry about your bird.

One of my hens showed up with a broken wing when she was a few months old. The drumette part of the wing was broke at an angle and through the skin. I squirted some betadine liquid on it, put a large non stick gauze pad (folded in half) under the wing to keep the wing from direct contact with the body, then used vet wrap to wrapping the broken wing to the body, wrapped under the good wing so the vet wrap would stick to itself. I changed the bandage daily for the first three days, reapplying the betadine, then every other day after that. If I remember correctly, it took about a week for her to hold her wing up like she was supposed to. We held her a lot, as she couldn't move well being wrapped up, and we kept her and her sister(for chicken emotional support) in a dog crate, her sister helped her a lot. I would let her move around a bit every time I took the bandage off, and took my cues from her and her sister. The last time I took the bandage off, she stretched her wings and tried to flap a bit, and her sister acted like her physical therapist, she kept pouncing on her to get her to flap her wings( not the I'm the top of the pecking order aggressive pounces ). She is the top of the pecking order, and flies better than the others.

I am not sure how you would do that with the wounds on the back, but I guess you could put the non stick gauze pads over those wounds where the vet wrap would go so it won't stick.
