Dog has jumped my fence and killed chickens on 2 occasions

Never believe what they TELL you

Make them show you the ordinance as WRITTEN

And keep in mind, if the law says "firearm", a pellet rifle is not a "firearm"

Depends on state law definition. In Arizona anything that discharges a projectile via gunpowder, compressed air, etc. IS a firearm. But I do agree with your point of asking them for the specific ordinance. In general city or county ordinances do not overrule state laws, and there is a state law (as I quoted) that allows a dog harming poultry (et.al.) to be killed.

I wanted to thank you. The law that you linked me two was only passed into finality this past January (as written) and the sheriff I talked to wasn't aware of it. Now I know I have the option-- not that I ever want to.

Also, in regards to pellet guns, they are classified as firearms where I am as of 2010 (not that I'd discharge one directly at anything much bigger than a squirrel).

I'll shut up now as I'm afraid I derailed this post too much already! My apologies, OP.

Im sorry, I get tired of this mambi pambi treatment of dogs and dog owners for whatever the reason. I live in suburbs in So. Cal and if I catch a dog attacking or killing my chickens, I will take a bat or whatever is necessary to hurt or kill the dog. Same goes for any racoons or other animals trying to attack my chickens.

I'm sorry that this has happened, my girls are like yours..family pets.

I had a similar thing happen only it was my duaghter's friend's dog. My mother -long time hen house operator, told me to pick up the dead chicken and flogg the livin b-jesus outta the dog with it and scold him relentlessly..

When he came 'round again I simply retreived the dead bird and did so.. He doesnt come in the yard at my house anymore... stays on the other side of the road..when he sees me he cowers.. but I wont trust him..4 sure.
