Dog having seizures

I have a wiener dog, he has seizures and is on phenobaritol to control them. Seizures can be life threatening, my Sister in law's dog just recently (2 months ago) died from a seizure and he was also on phenobarbitol. Most times w/ pets especially and people they never know the cause of the seizures. Your pet can be medicated for seizures w/o the huge costs of extensive testing, our vet, a rural Oklahoma vet only does blood work to monitor the seizure meds. The small amount of phenobarb your dog would need would be a minimal cost. My vet also suggested meletonin along w/ the phenob. this you can get at Wal mart. You said the seizures are 2+ years apart, but how do you know this? You stated they only lasted for 1 minute or so, you don't exclusively watch your dog 24/7 he/she could easily have more then you are aware of. I completely understand the financial aspect of it, and while I don't think it is an emergency at this point, I do urge you as soon as you can afford it to start medicating your dog. Another thing you may want to research is valarien root (ask vet if safe for dogs) it is a form of valium which is a common medication for the treatment of seizures.

it sound like epilepsy seizure. we had a beagle for 14 yrs when i was a little girl. she start have them about 6 month old then again at 1 1/2 yrs old. it only last for 1 to 3minutes [we found out that her father had it. what i did was i sat on floor and pet her and talk softly to her and she will come out of it she never was on meds for it. then i ran a animal rescue and i got in a lab that had epilepsy and he was on meds and i weene him off and when a thunder storm was near by he went into a seizure.
i sat on floor and pet him too. while having the seizure he sometime leak urine and drool. he got done a walk him outside so he could go to the bathroom. i adopt him out and the family learn to control his seizure without meds.

What dosage is she on? My dog's personality didn't change; he would just have a little trance for a while afterwards. He is 72 lbs and on 88 micrograms twice per day of levothyroxine but we have worked up to that through 6 years of seizures. He started out much lower.

She's 87 pounds...97.2 MG twice a day.

That's the dose that she started off at! She couldn't walk up the stairs for a week her hind end was so weak. I have an appointment Thursday so they can do a blood test on her. Sounds like maybe she should have less.

Or it could be her Thyroid as well that is changing her personality as well. I have been waiting for 10 days for her Thyroid panel.

I'm sorry , I confused the meds. My dog is also on Phenobarbital 130 mgs twice a day for seizures. He did start much lower and worked his way up. Sorry about that - he's on 4 different meds.

My dog is 11 lbs and he is on phenobarb 16 mg x 3 per day. If we are going to be busy and no one is going to be around for a mid day dose we double one of the other doses. He started much lower to 8 mg per day. He has had no personality changes or reduction of activity. My vet said if he did it would just be temporary until he adjusted to the meds. I don't know the dose for my sister in law's dog, but he was a very large dog near 100 lbs, and the dose is weight dependent.
