Dog / Human Conflict

Know that I mean this as kindly as i can say bluntly. Have raised sheep for almost 7 years, mainly to show lambs in 4H, but also for wool and meat (got a runty who-knows-what mutt goat, a pet ewe going on 10 and a stubborn, human and chicken hating, use your head literally thinking 5 or 6 year old ewe out of it).

Sheep are stupid animals. There is a reason you dont want to be a sheep and its not because in caetoons they all look the same. My 4H leader raised sheep and always talked about how they would constantly try to find ways to kill themselves.

Sooner or later, those dogs will hurt the sheep. Whether with teeth or by making the sheep panic and hurt themselves due to the dogs pressence or actions

We are having dog issues again although they appear to be staying near pond. Only Honey is out and she is staying close to house and chicken pens. Everyone else is penned except Lucy who is staying in the house. She will notify me if things escalate outside. I think the fencing will hold although will check periodically. I got a handful of .22 rifle rounds and the rifle out next to door. I do not want to shoot any dogs after dark unless they get within barnyard perimeter. My spotlight is not reliable.

They work great against wildlife and low number or small dogs. It would take two or three larger LGD's to deal with this and I would not be able to do the training with those.
I didn't necessarily mean that they could be 100%effective in this situation. But A), they alert you; B) you can send them; C) they know their business and do their best to perform it (they really sound fearless!); D) you can call them off when you want to AND THEY OBEY. I just find this whole combination of behaviors remarkable and it speaks so well of your relationship with them. So many people can't get their dogs to come when called (full disclosure, I have one at the moment with this problem we're working on but he was pretty feral when we got him). In all this madness you're dealing with, you're very blessed to have these dogs as your crew. Blessed is not the right word, as if they fell from the sky this way, I know that's not the case. You've no doubt put a lot of effort into them. I'm impressed and envious. ❤️

Pepper spray is an effective non lethal means of stopping dog attacks in case you find yourself in a situation where you can't fire a gun safely. US postal workers use one called Halt. There are many others you can choose from.

We got through night without incident. What I may try to do is trap the two dogs doing the incursions at night. I'm pretty sure they are among those that have come into barn area before new perimeter was installed. What appears to be going on now is neighbors are letting dogs out at night. One of the neighbors appears to keep dogs mostly in house and is not neighbor with most dogs, but he is one that had some of the dogs over killing chickens. Game camera will be used to confirm ID first.

One wants to be careful not to spray one's own dogs, livestock or self. Wind can be your enemy, I believe.
