Dog is sick

BTW, wormers kill worms, some surface bugs too MAYBE depending on the wormer, coccidiastats kill protozoa, antibiotics kill bacteria, and antifungal kill fungi. Vet won't intentionally use dogacide to treat an illness usually. That would be a lame vet.
Thanks but we will most likely just let it pass with the specific food diet unless it gets worse. But now she’s starting to have less diarrhea

Pumpkin is often recommended for dogs with diarrhea to help firm up the stool. It’s generally given in small doses. Because the dog is a small one, they don’t need much - probably like a teaspoon or so. The chicken and rice should be the main food the dog is getting.
If the diarrhea is excessive or super watery, you should take the pup to the vet especially if it’s been more than 24 hours. With such a small dog, they can get dehydrated quickly.

Interestingly I've seen vets treat cocci in dogs with antibiotics and ivermectin based heartworm prevention pills. Not recently. Now that I know more about it that doesn't seem logical really.

I once cared for a dog who had a persistent diarrhea. I fed him a diet of rice and cooked hamburger as per his vet's instructions. It cured him. This dog did not have an infection. He just had a digestive upset.

Heartworm is a kind of worm, but ivomec should not be used on all dogs. It's risky/lethal for certain breeds and crosses.

Not sure why you'd use antibiotics for coccidia unless a secondary infection was suspected.

But hey, that's irrelevant to this thread. As long as it hasn't been days and days and the dog's condition isn't suffering, often the dog's system will work it out. My point wasn't to go running to the vet. It was to not be petrified of medicines, and to know your medicinal vocabulary. They're partially responsible for lengthening lifespans in this day and age, they're not going away, and you may as well understand them.

Plenty of good advice already. It's very possible that the stomach upset WAS caused by the regular diet. Pet food ingredients can vary greatly batch to batch. And there are many, many recalls every year. I no longer feed commercial pet food, I feed human grade food because of all the issues with the industry. Never had a digestive issue since I switched. Also could have been any number of other things. If one of mine gets diarrhea and seems to feel fine otherwise I take them off solid food completely for 24 hours, just allow plenty of water. Dogs can fast just fine without any issues unless they have a medical condition that would preclude it, like diabetes.
Then start slowly with small amounts of bland cooked food like rice and chicken. Yogurt and pumpkin in small appropriate amounts can be helpful. Usually that's all it takes to let the gut rest and recover. If the diarrhea persists or there are ANY other symptoms of illness or blood in the stool, then I would not wait but would have a vet check things out. Parasites are not always visible in the poo. Other illnesses/viruses can also cause it. I had a dog pick up hookworm and end up with hemorrhagic gastroenteritis, which started with diarrhea, so stuff happens. Best of luck and hope she gets better!

If the diarrhea continues more than 48 hours even with the bland chicken and rice, it's time to see the vet. Dogs eat gross things and often get sick because of it (poop, garbage, dead animals, etc), but usually this will pass in 48 hours and it will be out of their system. Longer than this is a concern, as you and others have mentioned, of something that will not just pass through on its own, parasites, bacterial infection, virus, and the dog may need treatment from the vet. Also, at this point your dog may be getting dehydrated. I hope by now your pup is on the road to recovery and it was simply a case of dog eats gross things and stomach is paying the price.
