AI had a hen that just had her sides torn by a coyote 3 weeks ago. I gave her antibiotics everyday and gave her many baths to wash her sides. She was skinned both sides and already made a full recovery and laying again!

That is soooo, rewarding. Especially with those wounds.
It takes time, patience and focus.

Thought about this thread when I found this chick a few days ago, it's one that my turkeys attacked.

Had to amputate wing

Will try to get updated pics after I change the bandage.

Ohooo.....that looks subtantial. If the attack has not gotten an internal organ, she may have a chance.
Oh, my go girl, if anybody can do it you can.

AGood luck! My hen was bit to the bone. It was a massive injury. I thought about culling her since her wounds were so bad, but since she was still eating, drinking and acting mostly normal that I decided against it. I gave her aspirin for the pain. Her skin is still bunched up on both sides, but new skin grew and so did feathers over the new skin!!!! It was amazing and unbelievable to see such a remarkable recovery!

I did not separate my injured hen from the flock only because she is high up in the pecking order. Her wings covered most the injury and I sprayed blue-kote on both sides as well. Not one other hen pecked her injury which is surprising too! My injured hen did rest in the corner a lot with her back to the corner. Her wounds did get infected, but treating her with fish mox saved her. I sprinkled some on a piece of bread and she gobbled it right down. I spent a lot of time in the coop making sure she was okay. I also gave her vitamins and extra protein snacks.

I know how stressful and worrisome this is. I never expected her to lay since the bite wounds were so deep. I do not know how she got away either. All her feathers on both sides were plucked from the coyote. They are still in the woods. I did lose a few of my best hens that day. Ever since, I've kept them locked up unless it reaches 100 outside, which has been this way for the last few days.:(.

If this dog is a neighbors dog, then they are responsible for the damages. Although, my neighbor refuses to compensate for her dog eating our hens(now she has 2 chicken eating dogs:(). I'm so very sorry for your losses. It is very hard to lose such great animals. I hope your hen heals as quickly as mine did!

I'm sorry I too my 1st mini flock I lost all my hens on Sat well 1 was left alive only to escape lil after & I posted here & plenty of ppl said one hen would be sad & lonely and not happy & as much as I miss the last one I'd want what would be the best for her & seeing she didn't come home I guess that was her choice & I'll have start over & they just were old enough to give eggs few weeks ago ughhh hate loose animals never easy, good luck...

I understand too. The first two were killed. And few months later 9 were killed. And then the 15 hens killed months after that. So altogether 26 hens. I only have one left from my very first six babies. I loved those babies. I was so very excited and protected them and took such good care that they would all live. Fortunately, they all made it. I called them my Catholic Academy Girls. I went to an all girl Catholic Academy, and they reminded me of the friends I had. They would all six sit on my chair and read with me. They were all White Leghorns. I have not had such a freindly group of girs since. The wonderful experience I had is almost forgotten. Taken away by the killing. I have learned much. But I would rather have my girls than the learning experience.
My first love of the girls with them sitting on the chair with me, keeping me company, preening themselves, resting and just being with each other was too short of time.

Encouraging to see what chickens can come back from. My white rock got attacked by a hawk yesterday.. I thought I'd have to cull her, since I could see inside her entire chest cavity through the wound.. but that seemed like such betrayal after she survived a hawk, I really felt if she was willing to hang on, who am I to give up? She didn't seem too bothered by the wound, but shock can do that. So far she's made it through the night, and has eaten and drank some. She's more alert and putting up a fight when I try to clean her wounds.

I think she'll make it if I can keep infection away.

They're amazing animals.. I never thought I'd feel THIS strongly about my chickens.
