it doesn’t say what the risks of pyometra is compared to the risks of cancer

Glad they lived a long life! It is all about chances and weighing up pros and cons

No offence meant to anybody. I prefer with things like when to spay and neuter looking at research rather then personal experience since the research includes a lot more dogs then personal experience generally can

spaying/neutering can increase risks, there is still a fairly high chance nothing happens

I am probably only going to have females so I don’t need to worry about separating males and females!


My personal opinion is dog shouldn’t be spayed/neutered under 2 years old unless for medical reasons. like with a lot of animal things people need to do their own research and make there own decisions about whats best in their situation

My females have always been a hit or miss with other dogs. I'm unsure if unneutered males would be the same way.

My Maltipoo is almost 11 months old.

She’s already been through one heat. I have no idea if I should spay her or not, and if so, when? There are so many pros and cons and different opinions. Help!

I posted a link a bit ago on this thread that has a lot of information of the cons of early spaying and spaying in general

the pros of spaying are little to no chance of pyometra and owner convenience

what large majority of people in the dog community recommend is waiting at least until 2 years. If you should spay at all depends on your situation, how much of a issue did you found her heat? can you keep her separate from intact males and females if she doesn’t like them?

If you look for pictures of peoples intact dogs from 1year, 2year and even 3 years old sometimes their structure change hugely. Since she is a mix of 2 breeds that I don’t think are very similar in structure I would wait as long as possible to make sure she has as little issue with her joints as possible

I would wait till two personally but then little dogs grow faster so a year might be okay. Idk. I would still wait till two so you can be pretty sure she’s done growing. Some larger breeds might not be done till 3 but with her I think she should be by 2.

How often do dogs go into heat? Or does it kinda depend on size and breed? I know with humans, the cycles are every 28-40 days for most, but then like sheep, it's only roughly a month or so every 3-4 months if I remember right

Theoretically it’s twice a year so about every 6 months but for smaller breeds it might be 3 times a year and for larger or giant breeds it might only be once per year. And then it depends on the individual dog too.

Usually it's twice a year. Some sighthounds are only once a year, and probably some other breeds. Basenji have real weird cycles. Wait let me freshen up my memory on them

Thanks. I'll have to read it later on. I love basenji, but they aren't recommended for new dog owners, so they weren't on my list. I have to narrow my list down a bit more, I have like 30 something dogs on it.
