I would only trust a LGD breed on its own with livestock even with training

please don’t get a giant schnauzer to live out in a field like the one homesteading people on YouTube did šŸ˜† which I have brought up only because it still annoys me!

I know which ones you're talking about! And I completely agree, only LGD's get to live with the stock 24/7, and herding breeds get to be with the stock when they herd

Oh, no, these ones were specifically mentioned as being bred for sheep herding. I'm not finding anything on the breed information that seperates herding from guardianship though

They’re definitely different. Quite different.

Dang, okay. Probably won't end up doing that then. I'm not a fan of the looks of the ones we have around here
Yeah, herding they might just constantly herd and harass the stock if you’re not there. They love to work. Whereas livestock guardians should theoretically basically just lay down and ignore the stock. Or walk around and patrol the area. Unless there’s a threat. Theoretically a well trained herding dog won’t herd unless instructed to but you never know if left alone by themselves. They also won’t be able to protect very well really. They’re just not big enough.

I guess the Komodor is kinda neat looking, but I'd worry with that fur, they'd either need lots of hair cuts or would be too hot in the summers

That's fair. I guess I was more just hoping that the presence of a dog (or dogs) with the sheep would help deter most predators.

Ah okay. It could possibly especially if you take them outside a lot but I wouldn’t leave them alone with them. Good fencing will help. Also a regular herding dog might not stay with the stock. They might run off and do other, more interesting, things. Also there’s tons of different LGD breeds so I’m sure you could find one you like. You might be surprised at what’s in your area.

OK this will be many parts so here it goes. Yes, herding dogs shouldn't be with stock 24/7. It's actually a big pet peeve of mine, and a theme I've noticed quite frequently done. Herding dogs appear like a predator to the stock, and that's how they move the stock around. With controlled pressure. On the other hand, LGD's become part of the herd, and fight off predators. In addition, LGD's can effectively protect the stock against predators, something that herding dogs are not equipped to do
