Dog thread!🐾

Do any of y'all have tips on dealing with demand barking and a dog barking at a specific person in the family? Our rescue Belgian Malinios barks at my dad whenever he comes the house every day and barks when she wants something constantly, we've been trying to redirect it and it's gotten a bit better but its taking forever.
I hope there is a solution to this because I've been dealing with this for 4 years, particularly barking at specific people (all men), and I have not been able to stop it. It has become a habit now; not sure Luna actually knows why she's doing it. She likes the people and plays with them but barks/growls at them every. single. day. in certain situations.

For the barking when she wants something - have you tried completely ignoring her? Any attention, positive or negative, is what they want. She also might need more exercise than she is getting. The Malinois is an extremely energetic breed.

She's fine with my dad when he's sitting down but when he comes in a door she goes nuts, I hope she eventually stops

If we ignore her she keeps barking and starts bumping you, she goes out on 4-6 long walks a day and usually one outdoor ball chasing session until she is worn out and doesn't want to anymore plus indoor play with me or the puppy. I want to work on giving her more mental stimulation but it's gotten overlooked because I've been busy with the holiday prep and I need to prioritize that now.

Sounds like typical herding dog behaviors. My Aussies like to do this. Bark when they want something, sometimes they poke me with their nose. I tell them to knock it off. Once you reward the behavior they will keep giving it a try. Herding dogs also like to bark excessively at people coming in the house. I think it just goes with the territory. Helps to teach them to stop when you ask them to, but it will probably never go completely away. For me it's a daily maintenance sort of thing.

I feel you. Barking/fear problems are very frustrating to deal with. Sounds like you are doing a fantastic job keeping up with her exercise needs. Great work!

I've been around both males and females. I think I work better with males, although not 100% sure. I feel like males are more handler focused. Females will do what they deem necessary, very cutthroat if you will. Females will get the job done, and fast. Males are big marshmallows, but if it gets serious, it gets serious
I see this in other animals too!
I've though the exact same thing whenever I've come across a video of a "talking" dog. I imagine me getting woken up to the sound of this thing going "hungry" (because let's face it, I have a foodie of a dog)
Mine don’t need a button for that :lau
That can be diet related or not bathed enough. And Brew can be whiney as heck so I have experience with that 🤣🤣🤣 it kind of annoys me but I’m used to it now lol hyper would probably annoy me. Brew can chill in the house. I love doofuses though lol the sillier the better
Bathing too much can make the coat oiler, the glands have to start producing more because you keep washing all the oil out

That’s another thing! In my experience male dogs whine and whimper wayyy more than females! Thoughts?
I haven’t had males so I can’t compare but there is a difference between the breeds Pepsi is the whiniest, next is Fanta, Twiggy(though she growls instead of whining) Pikelet

The best thing you can do is try and work out exactly why she is barking
-when is she barking
-what is happening when she is barking
-where is she
-could she be too tired/stressed/nervous/excited

Is he the only one she barks at when coming in the door? what makes her start barking? The door noise? Seeing? Smelling? Where is she when he comes in?

you could actually be giving her too much exercise and she might not know how to calm herself down. Going until she is worn out means she will continue to get fitter, they have been bred to be able to do huge amounts of exercise so prioritising mental stimulation will be good!

with dogs like a Malinios they tend to get more hyper when tired rather then calm down. If she isn’t all ready crate trained, crate training might be good, they benefit hugely from it
