Dog thread!🐾

I will refrain from saying anything else than this, as I am not a trainer, and cannot/should not give training advice of this kind to other people. What everyone does for each of their dogs will differ. I just think the least we can do is look at what science tells us is OK and what is not. I also saw some things about respect. To me when people say things like "your dog should respect you because you are on top" just reminds me of the whole "you're your dog's alpha" which we know is complete bull poop

I don’t think any dog has 0 food drive but by rewards I mean toys, praise, treats etc (I find praise isn’t enough to actually teach a new behaviour (unless the behaviour is rewarding) but thats just my experience)

If you don’t spend any time teaching the dog what to do and just punish them when they don’t behave how you want them to then I have a issues

leash walking/ heel is very difficult for dogs because their natural walking speed is faster then the average person and the environment is very rewarding specially for dogs with low food drive and low handler focus. I don’t think pulling can be fixed nicely by purely punishment there must be some reward for not pulled
I wasn’t saying dogs had zero food drive. Just that some don’t NEED cookies. And also never said it should be taught with pure punishment or that I agree with that. But Brewster for example couldn’t care less about cookies when we are out on a walk or in public. Doesn’t care about toys either.

I agree they don’t necessarily need treats but I do think you can train any dog with treats but I different reward might be more valuable and you may get better results using that instead

I also don’t think it can be considered training if you don’t use a reward at any point

nothing wrong with what you said Dawg just trying to make what I mean clearer :thumbsup

I don’t necessarily agree all dogs can be trained with treats. I’ve known some that weren’t very good motivated at all. Maybe if you had steak or something 🤣

That makes sense though.

Buddy isn't one to accept treats when we're our and about. I don't stress too much on heel work however. What I do is teach him how to loosely walk beside me at home, and outside I always take treats just in case, but if he doesn't, whenever he pulls we just sit and wait, or go in another direction. Of course proper behaviour is followed by a ton of praise, and at the end I let him pull or whatever he'd like to do

Denver could care less about treats when on walks or new places. Tucker does anything for treats anywhere.

I definitely dont like all negative training as i feel dogs need a reward when they do something good. My dogs were trained with treats and where good till adolescence stage. Then i redid all the training and they are good again. No negative training could teach mine what they know.
And i dont think training collars are negative, but i just have them as backup in case i am to drop the leash and they run off.
Thats all im going to say though.
