Only bad part was someones tiny off lead doodle came at Tucker. I have a quick reaction time. He didnt react a lot. But i picked him up and walked the other way.
Well the owner sat on her porch yelling the dogs name

Yeah he is use to me picking him up. and he would have a full on reaction escalating the situation quickly. Ive noticed if i pick him up the other dog doesnt come much further dont know why.

That makes sense. Maybe picking him up kind of breaks their concentration on him or makes him seem bigger. Once chase was limping on a walk, and I was like am I gonna have to carry him home? I don't think I could have.

Thats what im thinking, he just seems bigger.
Tucker is a bit under 58lbs so he is easy to carry.

I definitely couldnt have carried Denver home. The few times she was limping i was glad to be close to home and learned not to walk her in the cold.

I love being in a non pet friendly store and seeing someone with 4 chihuahuas in her cart, and workers are petting them.....
I know they werent service dogs they were shaking and had their ears tucked as they were anxious. Snd they cant task in a cart under blankets.

I think what I'm struggle with on my end is not knowing what to expect overall. Being a large breed I do know that it can take those two whole years for them to settle down, which in terms of commitment I don't mind, but I don't know what that will look like overtime, so it'll be a learning curve.


How would you recommend I discourage him? I've been either trying to distract him with a toy, saying "ah-ah" (firmly, not harshly), and moving towards him to he is destabilized and has to sit or flop sideways. I think I've gently used his scruff and collar to reposition his body in a different direction, too. Not sure I'm doing it right.

I do my best to do what I can with positive reinforcement. I think once I get a fanny pack for holding treats (which for now is just food so he doesn't get overfed), I will be able to be a bit more effective at it since I'll have the rewards on hand.
I did give him his first little chew treat yesterday, and he enjoyed it quite a bit. I wouldn't do it every day since he's so young yet. For now, he is elated to have a nice, dead stick!

All my aussies never bothered my chicks or chickens. It's one thing I love about the breed. They do like to chase the cats, but I've never had one kill a chicken like some of my other breeds have.

We will see what Jäger thinks of chickens. We likely won't have any until next spring, so it'll be a bit.
