Dog thread!🐾

Posted this on my “bully breeds” thread but I figured this would fit here too especially given this thread is more active/larger LOL

BUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thoughts on “crate and rotate”? A lot of people nowadays do it but I personally could never ever do that long term or even short term. It’s A LOT of work. And management can fail. Mistakes can happen. Etc. plus, personally, for me, I would just rather my (theoretical) dogs get along if I ever got the chance to have multiple at once. Or even if I just had Brew/ever get him back, I just prefer they get along with other dogs in general. Which he does. Even when he’s been growled at before, he just drops to the ground and rolls over LOL so yeah. I got lucky with him with his breeds. The only thing is sometimes with certain people he can be overprotective OR scared or both but usually even with people, he loves everybody. He really is a great dog. Best dog I have ever had.
I think it can work in very specific situations(a lot of space, dedicated owner, either very good professional help or is the professional) but it's not something I think the average person could do. It's definitely not something I could manage

It does also depend a lot on what kind of aggression and why it's happening. None of my dogs have very dog friendly personalities (Pikelet is the closest, second is Fanta). Twiggy is mostly okay with the others (don't know with strange dogs) she resource guards a bit, currently has painful ears and has feral dog communication instead of domestic. Her small correction can look like a lot more than other dogs. She is also not that fond of Pepsi. The big issue is that Pepsi loves fighting, she won't say no to a chance to fight something (it's not the I hate something aggression, she also never starts the fights). This has caused situations where Twiggy has corrected Pepsi for something, which Pepsi usually tries to deescalated with Twiggy but sometimes she decides it wasn't actually fair and neither of them will back down. Once separated until they calm down they are fine again

So I think there are a lot of things to consider. Like breed, health, is it temporary, what damage have the done already/how bad was it, how fixated are they, is it easy to split them up if necessary

Pepsi and Twiggy have fought twice only and have not hurt each other

That makes sense!!!!!! I think it does depend on a lot lol

Never heard of that term but I'm going to assume it's exactly what I do
I have a lot of dogs with different temperaments, personalities and backgrounds.
Wizard is one of the first dogs in a long time I've been comfortable leaving with Misty, but I know if I let him near a family member's entire male, things will not end well at all.
I'm not sure if I’ve ever had a dog that got along with ALL dogs, even my two biological sisters get snappy with each other when there's hormones involved.

Yeah, sounds like you do do it a bit LOL

It’s basically where one dog is out and the other is crated (or put in a dog room or certain part of the house or whatever) and then they switch occasionally so they both get time with you and exercise and training, etc. but then go back to the crate or their area when done. OR you just have them in like separate parts of the house and they stay there permanently. But obviously with this they get exercise and training too. And you let them out separately usually unless they get along some I guess.

If talking about ACTUAL crates I might think a little differently but I do runs, and would like to add good yards into the mix.
I guess managing dogs is already normal to me considering I've had to manage entire males and females to prevent accidental breeding. Having one or multiple ways to completely seperate dogs is needed sometimes.
There's other reasons I spilt up my dogs too, like prey drive. One or two of them and they ignore the cats as nothing more of the scenery, or don't spare much thought for the chickens. Start adding in more dogs and things change and I stopped taking those risks years ago.

I'm working with more than just dogs that belong to me or dogs I have the right to make decisions for so their safety is just my number one priority. I need to know I can spend a week at work and know there have been certain rules followed so everyone is okay and not going to be showing up at my workplace 🙃
I try my best to know each of my dogs and what/who triggers them, and it is my responsibility to then manage that. It's going to come down to the individual owner and what they're capable of, and what they're willing to do.
I would never part with Wizard just because he doesn't get along with one other dog. I'm aware most or all of that aggression comes from his previous home because i know exactly what kind of situation and environment he was in, he did have to kept seperate there too. But he's been fine with basically all my girls, even my highly anxious Misty.

You make excellent points!!!!!!!!!!! I feel like maybe if I got really attached to a dog then maybe I wouldn’t rehome them and would try crate and rotate but idk. I like my sanity and peace LOL
