It's true that simply telling the dog what not to do won't fix the problem, you need to both tell the dog what not to do AND show them what to do. If you only show them what to do they still might choose the wrong option because nobody said it's the wrong choice and there's no consequences for doing itAversive methods often work by suppressing a behavior out of fear or discomfort. While this might appear to be a quick fix, it doesn't teach the dog what to do instead. True training involves teaching the dog a desired behavior and creating a positive association with it. This builds a more reliable and willing partner.
