Dog training methods

The only time I've used "negative reinforcement" was when my dog started to guard food. I will not put up with that. Of course, I never hurt her, but I would use my intimidating voice and scruff if necessary (like when she was choking on a bully stick 😒).

All other training we did was clicker based with positive reinforcement. She was very food motivated, so this worked well. I could even use kibble and give her meals as training sessions. We paired hand signals with verbal commands. Super smart girl... I miss her so much. RIP Dory.

My family taught our dog to do his business in the woods or tall grass, away from the lawn. He does this on his own now, even in unfamiliar places.

When he was a puppy we carried him to the wood line whenever he needed to go, and rewarded him when he did his business. We got him in winter, so we were able to use a plowed path to direct him to the woods. At first we had to walk him to the wood line ourselves, but eventually he learned to take himself there. It was so worth it- we never pick up dog poop from the lawn!

Timber going above and beyond to avoid soiling the path:
