Dog training thread

I guess I’ll give an update on Chase here!

For those that know I have been doing tracking. I just couldn’t keep up with it in this heat though. Chase gets burnt out fast. I decided to wait until winter to continue. I plan on changing it up then! I have been focusing on soft surfaces but I have realized it would be best for me to backtrack and go to hard surfaces. I’ll be doing that when it gets cooler! Chase has his article indication down though!! Not much gets past him, even the tiny top of a screw/nail head.

I have been focusing more on his focused heeling lately. I find I am never satisfied with it🤣 I finally realized what’s bugging me though. He keeps forging in front of me which causes his head angle to slack. Trying to figure out how to keep him a bit back without correcting him🤔

Short video of it! With a bonus down in motion. He is really good at those. His sits in motion though… that’s a work in progress🤣🤣

Awwwwwww

@ShrekDawg if Brew decides to charge after ANYTHING, give him all the slack in the line and you charge the opposite direction. Keep a tight grip on the end of the leash. BUT don't do this if he only has his regular flat collar on! He could slip out of it and then he would be loose. You need a training collar of some kind (NOT a harness!) and at least a 6-foot leash. NOT a retractable leash. I do mean CHARGE the opposite diection, he really needs to feel it when he runs out of slack. You won't hurt him but you might startle him. Then gather up the slack and be ready to do it again.

Do this EVERY TIME he goes charging after anything. If you do it right and consistently, after about three times he will STOP charging! He will see a distraction and turn his eyes upon YOU to see where you are going. HE will walk politely beside you, working to keep that line slack! So do some left and right turns and some about-face turns, to keep him interested in YOU.

He will walk so politely, right next to you, on a slack line, that people will ask you where you had him trained.
Absolutely love this method, especially with a prong like Squawkers said. Not only does it stop pulling/charging at things but helps focus too. I've used it on both my dogs. I'm always wary of mentioning it because lots of people don't understand it or prong collars

I so need to start my scent work with willow 😩

I’m gonna look like a maniac if we’re out walking and then just take off running when I see a dog or squirrel or person or whatever 🤣😭

Maybe start in the yard first. LOL
