One of my biggest dog owner pet peeves (no pun intended!) is when someone's dog is doing some kind of negative behavior (barking, growling, lunging, etc) and the owner says "be a good boy/girl". The dog doesn't understand the "be a", so the dog thinks that it's getting praised for doing that behavior, so it keeps doing it.

Ooh.. yes. Like when a little dog goes running to the door barking when someone knocks, and the owner picks it up and stands there talking to the visitor, petting and stroking the dog to "calm it down" while the dog growls, snarls and barks viciously! Then they wonder why the dog bites somebody. ☹️

And then of course everyone blames the dog

Yes! Then they say "oh he's just excited, he LOVES people/other dogs" like ok sure he does....

Yes.... exactly. With Tucker being reactive he always barks when someone comes to our house. I tell him no. He stops barking And then he is learning to go to his kennel when someone comes. This way he always knows he has a safe option away from everyone.
When he is full on reacting he is going to listen to me anyways. So i dont say anything.
But if he will still listen then i tell him no and redirect him. If i were to say good boy, he would think he is being good. I dont understand people doing that either

FINALLY got to the store for training today, at first she was like nope. Full stop brain on cloud 9. So I decided to buy some treats she's never had. She started paying attention and did lots of good work. She's doing wonderful ignoring people and noises. We did stays, recall, some position changes, dpt, set up positions and heel work. At first she was lagging, I started doing a couple corrections and lots of praise for the right positions. She's getting better I think. She's a little lazy the last few days though
