Hello dog training obsessed chicken people (there has gotta be a shorter name I can think of 🤣)
Wondering if any of you have advice -
We have a 7mo cavoodle. She’s, stubborn to say the least.
We’ve got some obedience down however the one thing she STRUGGLES with is learning how to lay down.
Sit? Fine.
Loose leash walking? Fine
Recall? Fine
Stay? Getting better lol
Leave it? Fine
Go to bed? (Crate) fine

But down? It’s like she tries (head lowers) then just stands up and runs around and then comes back into a sit and stares at me.
Any advice? 🤣🤣

Note: I’ve trained our other dogs fine lol. But I’ve never met one who is hell bent on not learning down lmao

Go back to having her on leash, good collar, sharp as she needs. You can push her down from a sit by pushing on her back between her shoulders, usually works. Then stand on the leash, short enough that she can't get up, until you release her. Start with short moments, and work up from there.
'Down' is a submissive posture, and she's playing a game with you about it.
She should 'sit' or 'stand' until released, not until she feels like moving!

I didn’t consider the leash! Thanks!

I’ve heard some dogs just have a very very hard time with it. Honestly, if you don’t really really want it I’d not worry about it. Or at least give it a break and try again later. There are times when the dog also isn’t quite mentally capable of understanding a harder task. You might wait 6 months then try again and see the lightbulb go off.

If you really really want her to I’d try downing from standing position. Most people teach down from sitting and while this is probably easier for them to understand it encourages slow, slopping downing. It’s just an idea of a different (and better) way to teach it. Maybe she has a hard time understanding downing from sitting.

A short video of chases tracking.

He overshot the article at the end though. Normally I just let him pass them because I don’t want to encourage circling unless he’s lost the track but it was the last one so I needed him to find it so I could end the track. At the same time though he’s supposed to be finding the articles, sooooo maybe I shouldn’t let him pass them? But I don’t think that’s a good idea because then be constantly checking with me thinking I’d show him articles. I feel like it’s better to let him pass them if he misses them, but wondered if anyone here had any thoughts. I know why he’s missing them though so maybe I should just worry about fixing that 😭 🤣

Chickie any tips for slowing down him during tracking? It’s weird because it’s a recent thing. Granted I haven’t done any tracking since summer but it’s weird he’s all of a sudden going too fast. I did do some hard surface tracking and that’s when he started going faster. But you’d think it would be the opposite. Hard surfaces are so much harder so you’d think he’d go slower.

Also no idea where that pawing came from on his indication 🤣 he has never done that before. Of course as soon as I start filming he does something weird. Normally he plops straight down with it in between his feet.
