Dog up the road and the loss of a JG

Seriously nobody in their right mind wants to shoot a dog over killing a chicken especially a dog that is clearly someone’s pet. I would think most would do whatever they could to find the owner and work out a solution.
You do seem to live in a bit of a fairytale though. There seems to be a bit of an animal rights ninja in you possibly.
Either way I think it’s safe to say nobody on here is out shooting dogs for fun or for looking at their chickens wrong.

Just tell your neighbors if the dog comes to your house again you'll have to shoot it. Your neighbor will put the dog up. If not, wait til the dog comes again just catch it and bring it to local shelter, or keep it tied up on your property until the neighbor comes looking for it and have a good talking to your neighbor. No sense in your chickens being cooped up because of your disrespectful neighbor.
I agree with you my neighbor learned his lesson because His dog came back after I told him several warnings so I took it to the pound and now he doesnt let his dogs out with out supervision

Call animal control. No dog should be allowed to run free on private property and/or destroy private property. The owner needs to learn how to be a good neighbor. Dogs are not a right, they are a privilege. Also the neighbor needs to reimburse you for your property.

Stray dog comes in and so much as worries my birds, shooting it is optional. I maced the last one and sent him home in pain (bear spray is a fun and colorful option and has good range, as slingshot is often not satisfying enough and as an added bonus, paints the dog's face as a message to the owner). Our township has laws that says if I get pictures of the dog worrying stock it will be seized and destroyed if I feel like documenting it.

Stray dog comes into my yard and worries my kids, dog's going "to freezer camp" if I can catch him with no mercy. "Freezer camp" might be a contractor bag in the trash (and if I feel like calling the cops and not shooting the dog will be taken and destroyed for me as the law does not favor vicious free roaming dogs here).

Kids are sacred ground and dogs are animals, not people. I kill animals that threaten my family (you know, when they come onto MY property and worry MY kids). Protector is under the job description of parent.

Good luck with your dog-vermin problem. I hope you find a way to get law enforcement on your side somehow. Sounds like I don't want to move to your area in Virginia.

That’s how irresponsible ignorant people learn. At the price of another animal. They don’t care. If they did we’d never need to have this conversation.
My neighbors dog was just shot. A boarder collie. They got it as a pup. It was never in their back yard (yes they have a fence) they got bored with it and threw it out front as soon as it started to chew things. Often it would come to my front door. Children in the neighborhood could not play outside cause it constantly jumped and wanted attention. The owner was constantly wanting to give it away she even asked if someone would take it train it and give it back. It turned into a chicken killer and was shot. Somehow she thought she could play victim. Her cries of unjustice were met with photos of what her dog did. Her reply?
Well...didn’t want the dog anyways. Meanwhile.....
The chickens are still dead.
This has happened 3 times this year. Different properties.
Some people learn.
Some just don’t know what they are talking about.
Some just act ignorant why
Because they don’t care.

So ... what happened?

Did you build a fence?

Did neighbors dog learn to stay home?

Did it eat your daughter?

Did it eat your chicken(s)?

Did you clarify with animal control what you can/can't do?

Did you bury it?

If it happened to me, I would buy or construct a live trap, trap the dog, put it in the boot of my car and dump it 50 miles away
