Dogs eating chicken "packages." Don't want to know the answer to this but I need to know.

I feel your pain. We have acreage that both my dogs and cats have access to. Needless to say, "kitty roca" is a local delicacy here. I only let my chickens occasionally let my chickens free range in the regular yard, so the dogs have limited access to chicken poo. Nevertheless, they love it. Not only do they eat in, they roll in it too. Yuck! I do worry about parasites being passed to the dogs. I like how Hinotori has fecals done on her dogs regularly. Unless you are lucky enough to have parasite free chickens, chances are your dogs could get worms of some sort.
Oh yeah, occasionally we have deer poop in our yard too. My dogs love this too. So nice to call your dogs into the house, and they have a big stinky, green smear down their neck.

I am a dog trainer and stopped my dogs eating the chicken poop by enforcing the ''leave it'' command. I primarily taught this because when my chicks were young they were on medicated feed with amprolium and I was concerned about my dogs eating poop with traces of medications. Now, they may occasionally eat one once in a blue moon -when I am not looking -but I am not concerned as I was before since now they are only on layer crumbles.

Along with "wait", "leave it" is one of my all time favorite commands. I'm not a professional dog trainer as yourself, but I have taken so many dogs through professional courses, I'm super familiar with alot of those commands. "Leave it" works great for my dogs too, but only if I'm out there with them.

Chickens eat the horse poop, dogs eat the chicken poop (and the cat poop), now if I could get the horses to eat someone's poop I could have a cycle!

This is why I seriously NEVER let a dog lick me. Anywhere. EVER.

If that would be the case the shovel can go back into the shed.

Just lovely nature at work

Here are some good things to remember if you ever feel more disgusted than usual when you see you dogs tucking into their poo treats:

It will cut down on the amount of cleaning you have to do in the garden
Reduce you dogs food bill
Give you dogs a very fresh and natural diet
Stop the place smelling of chicken poo
Stop dogs getting bored

Seriously it will not harm your dogs at all. Just make sure the worm and de parasite you dogs and chickens regularly. Also you might find that your dogs actually loose interest somewhat in the poo after a few weeks as the novelty wears off.

That's all true but probably not do much for their already offensive breath.

Miss my dog and his breath. RIP Bear.

They make FOR-BID to keep dogs from eating other dog poop. Made from vegetable protein and MSG. You sprinkle it on dog food to make the poop "unpalatable" to other dogs. Safe for use in dogs, cats, and horses. Not sure if it would work for chicken poo or if OK to use on chickens.

What will keep the dog from eating their own?

What is in dog poop that makes it palatable without this stuff? Just funnin' with you, I get your point.

WOW! I think I feel better! Nice to know that if I keep up with everyone's meds that chances are everyone might be okay. I was actually expecting MUCH worse responses to this so at least I can stop sweating, fretting, yelling, crying and sobbing over my beloved dogs. Now, everyday my chickens make a different shaped package every time. Can someone point me to a place where I can identify which is normal-looking packages and which is not?

L O V E this board! Thanks all

This page has lots of pictures of chicken poo. I had another page as well, but can't find it at the moment. Hope this one helps. :)

I have this same page. I actually have it saved in my documents for a quick reference. I have found that sometimes my chickens poo resembles some of the bad ones, but I don't worry about it unless it's consistently resembling bad poos. (unless I see worms, of course)

That.

My dog eats chicken and calf poop, and I asked the vet about it and she said that since our dog gets heart and intestinal worm protection (Interceptor) that she is fine.
