Dogs killed chickens, ready to give up. *Another chicken killed.*

A .22 or .17 caliber rifle should work. .17's are more accurate than .22's and are suitable for varmint and small game shooting. I've been drooling over a Savage .17 with thumb hole stock for the longest time...in a few months I'll finally be able to get one. They run in the $250-$300 range, but their lightweight, accurate, and won't knock you out of your boots when you try to kill something.

Another chicken dead

At least I found her this time. I walked down the road checking for feathers, neighbour kindly shouted asking if the dogs had been over again. I only found the dead chick on my way back.

I know I was asking for it letting them free-range for an hour this afternoon. I go in to get a drink, come back, and one is missing. THAT QUICK. I am so upset at myself. And so ANGRY.

Chickens are going to stay in the run until at least Tuesday, I just hope the freaking dogs don't chew their way into it by then.

That fence is the edge of the neighbours property. For "strays", they sure like hanging around her place.

My poor chickie

I'm having all kinds of violent mental images, involving a dogs head on a spike on the corner of our property.

ETA: I just went out and got pictures of one of the dogs sitting on her porch, I think it would be helpful if worst comes to worst.

I am so mean...wondering if those doggies would like a pie pan hooked up to some power with a really big juicy meatball??

We have 9 RIR and 9 Buffs and our dogs are in a fence and one is tied on a lead. well the chickens are free roaming and one messed up and sat on the fence

but i couldn't be mad at my big boy, the chicken got to close to the doggies area. and they are teasing the dog on the lead.

I'm waiting for them to open, they are closed for the weekend and holidays, go figure all this trouble would start Friday at 5pm when they close at 4pm. Their voicemail says to call the sheriff if it's an emergency, but I think that would class as if a bear was holding me hostage or something, lol.

If Animal Control won't do anything for us, I'll get hubby to stake out the garden with his handgun. Noise be d*mned. He will be home Tuesday morning so I only have one more day of them trying to eat into the coop.

Darn dogs!

A 22 is good but you have to reload between shots unless it's a semi-automatic... Seeing that you don't have any gun experience, you might just pass for now on that. I'm all for it, you just need a little training. When DH gets back have him take you out to shoot. My DH bought a "home security system" (also known as a 12 gauge shotgun). I was very intimidated and worried about it until he took me out. After a few hours (or more) in the field, you'll start to know what you and your gun can do. You'll want to be comfortable with a gun before you need to use it. That's just my 2 cents. I am not trying to sound preachy.

I'd wait until DH gets home. Then he can take care of the dogs. Can you move the chicks/chickens into your garage or tub until then? I know it's messy... but may be worth it for their safety and your sanity.

If you can't, I imagine you'll need to camp out with some pepper spray (bad stuff for dogs - can blind them if not taken to vet) or a nice air horn to scare the poop out of them. You could blow the horn, throw rocks, etc... They'll run like heck. However, they'll be back the next night or later that night. I imagine they are hungry if that beast of a neighbor isn't caring for them. I'd turn her in for animal neglect.

After you get comfortable with the gun... SHOOT THE darn PIG while your at it next time it's in your garden. What a nitwit!

I hope you can get some sleep and your birds are safe!

Best wishes

Absolutely call the police right now and report it as "vicious dogs." When the officer arrives, explain the chicken killing and be sure to tell him that when you tried to drive them away they growled at you and you were afraid for your own safety....they DID growl at you, right? (wink wink) The police are pretty much obligated to respond to that sort of 911 call. Even on weekends and holidays, the police have a procedure in place for dealing with dangerous animals. Make sure the officer knows how frightened you are for your own safety - not just your birds. If you are also afraid for neighbor kids, visiting grandchildren, other pets, etc., so much the better. If the officer seems reluctant to do anything, ask him for his full name, badge number, and the name of his superior officer "just in case those dogs come back and I have to call again." Sure, that's a veiled threat, but the cop needs to know you're deadly serious about him protecting you and your animals from these "killers."

As someone who has picked up lots of starving, mange infested, sick, sick dogs who someone thought driving them far away would get rid of, please do not dump unwanted dogs in the country. If you are not a complete sadist who wants animals to suffer slowly and die, then either try to rehome them or put them down yourself. Dropping dogs off further down the road is both cruel to them and cruel to the people who live down the road.

If people would just spay and neuter their pets and keep them in their yards, this sort of thing would not be an issue.
