Dominique or Barred Rock??

It may be mixed, or simply hatchery quality. It is a barred rock, that's a great pic above of a dominique's comb for comparison. There are other differences, mostly that the dominiques are lighter built, but the comb is the easiest way to tell.

GREAT!!! Thanks so much for all the feedback! I will be shopping for a BR rooster in the spring!

BR's are friendly and awesome layers.

I just think yours looked mix because of the build. If you want to breed for pet quality, go for it. One of my BR's has the wrong coloured legs (pink with grey on shafts), but I am still going to breed her with my BR roo. I have a trio.

Here is my hen with the wrong coloured legs. It's a genetic abnormality I am assuming. Her parents (saw first hand) both have bright yellow legs.

Here are my other two BR. Male and female. I bought them from a lady who was given 12 hatching eggs of BR and 12 hatching eggs of Dominique. All had single combs.

Here is my cockerel.

I have read that if the father is a BR, ALL of his offspring will have barring even if bred to a solid colour chicken (RIR, White rock, etc). And if you have a BR hen and cross it to a RIR roo, you get sex linked chicks (males are barred, females are not).

WHOA!! So if I breed her with my RIR roo, Waylon, they will be sex linked?? How will that affect their laying tendencies and other characteristics that make those two breeds so unique and great?

HOW DO YOU PEOPLE KNOW ALL THIS STUFF???

Genetics confuse me, but this is what I have read several times. Some people confuse a BR cockerel as being a pullet if they were sex linked as I described above. Their barring is the colour of a pure BR hen's barring, so the light colouring cockerel in a pure BR means nothing in a sex link situation. Hope I'm making sense

I have really only been chicken-keeping since August 1st this year. I spend almost all my time thinking/reading/being with my chickens. I really can't wait to get started breeding in the spring!

Their laying tendencies should be spot on.. RIR & BR are both wonderful layers of large brown eggs. I think it's possible your males might get some bleed through of red in their barring, but if you want to keep just the girls, this shouldn't be a problem.

Thanks so much! You have been very helpful. I may experiment with Waylon and one of my BRs to see what happens. I already have a local lady I found on here who is going to hook me up with BR roo!! I loooooooove this place....maybe a little too much. My husband works at a drug and alcohol rehab facility and he said he is going to have to start a new program for me....Chicken rehab LOL
