Dominique or Barred Rock??

this is my dominique rooster, dominik. Can you see the difference! Once you see it, it is very obvious, spikes or no spikes. i would prefer spikes (they look cooler) but his rose comb doesnt freeze (wonderful for our wny winters!).

He's a beaut!! I bet he's a ladies man ;)

LoveMyFeatherBabies- by chance, does your cockerel have feathered feet? His body width, fluff, and tail shape give him the appearance of a developing largefowl male Cochin.

Zigmont- There are quite a few differences between the two breeds. Most people tell them apart by their comb types, but there are other physical traits that separate the two breeds. Their body weight is smaller, their color less uniform, and their actually body type differs from Plymouth Rocks. In personality, Dominiques tend to be very agreeable and friendly fowl.

Okay, I just read through this thread and have a question. We saw an ad on our local swap-and-shop site for rose comb dominique chicks and went and bought six. We've been looking over them really good since we've had them at home and have noticed that three of them appear to have a rose comb and three of them appear to have a single comb. I saw the rooster and he definitely had a rose comb. The only thing I remember about the hens is that they all had bald spots on their backs. Is it possible that he has both Barred Rock and Dominiques that he is breeding?

They're probably crossbreeds. The rose comb is dominant, so if they had a yard full of barred rock, or marans or even crossbreed hens, and used a rose comb, barred rooster, the majority of the offspring would be rose comb.

The overall condition and the discrepancy you mentioned in the Dominique breed thread concerning the ages of the birds leads me to believe they came from someone not quite as knowledgeable about the breed (or chickens in general) as their ad lead you to believe. OTOH, if they are part Dominique, they should grow up to be thrifty, productive, personable birds.

We got the overall impression that he was in it just for the money. It seems like they were all taken care of just enough to be kept alive. I told my wife last night that I feel less of we "bought these chicks" and more of a "we rescued them".

I guess a lot of people know the difference, but I don't... I have two of these girls and they are GORGEOUS!! My dad went back to school (and I'm so proud of him!) for horticulture and one of the girls in his class is moving to DC so she gave us 10 already laying hens, a chicken tractor, 65 egg cartons, and some feed FOR FREE! These ones were in that bunch. She didn't know what they were.

My money would be on Barred Rock.
