Dominique Thread!

The deep litter method worked great for a while keeping the smell down... I didn't have to change the pine shavings for nearly the first two weeks... Then it went to every third day or so... Now it is change it every day and they still are smelling up the place! lol. Thank goodness for the rain, but it is time to move these ladies and gents outside!!
Oh my yes! If I had MY birds that close to that age, I'd have horribly picked babies on my hands. I guess you have calmer breeds than mine.

If you have a dry barn or coop outside, you can move them at any time.

Something that helps with the smell is fermented feed. You can check out the fermented feed for meat birds thread on BYC. It has gone WAY beyond meat birds. Most of us are feeding it to ALL of our birds and are quite pleased with the results... less smell being one of them.

Good info, Lacy Blues! Thanks!
They got some outside time yesterday afternoon. I haven't had any problems with picking yet, but they get plenty of attention from my three-year-old and me lol. I think she keeps them pretty busy during the day when I am at work. My wife, however, is picking me to death to get them out of the house. :)

I should also add that I got 98 percent done with their coop and halfway finished with a dog-proof run when I broke my hand... So I have a little more hardware cloth in the coop to put up to make it snake-proof. I'm gonna try to one-hand it up this weekend.
I read earlier in the thread to "Build the coop BEFORE you get the chicks"... What a novel idea! Tho I would have had plenty of time if I had realized I was too old to chase a mini-donkey stud through the pasture in my bathrobe and slippers. He went to the sale and I went to urgent care lol.

Your wife should be able to manage putting up the hdw cloth!!

lol I agree, but she's not nearly as 'outdoorsy' as I am. However, she did recently buy some shoes that weren't high heels, so maybe after a couple of years, farm life has begun to wear off on her

Editted to add and get the thread back on track,
Buffalogal,
Do you know of any Dom breeders a little closer to south central OK?
Beautiful bird you won with at Shawnee, BTW.

I love my Doms!!

They are the most lovable little chicks, I have a few other breeds now, but the Dom hens and Roosters are so friendly, they come running to the the edge if the cage when they hear my voice!!! They jump right in my hands and will crawl right up my body and snuggle under my chin and fall asleep.....

I posted a couple weeks ago about my little dom chick. All the responses said GIRL! Now im worried. Check out this comb...ive never had a dominique so im unsure. She/HE is approx 4 weeks old
