Dominique Thread!

Lol Buffalogal, thank you anyway... I guess I'll work on getting an incubator ready for when I get ready to grow this flock. And ya never know... I may luck out and get some good, type-y birds out of this batch.
If you change your mind, let me know; both the breeders are members of the DCA and have fine, quality birds.

Three weeks old today feathers and colors really coming in nice.

Not sure who to credit with the idea of placing a strip of sod with the chicks, I know I read it on BYC. Great idea, keeps them happy and curious. I just change it out every few days to keep thing fresh. The chicks love it, and have had no problems with pecking or harassing one another.

Our chicks are a week old. Their wing feathers are growing fast and they are starting to get a tail. They are very calm and let me pick them up any which way. When I put my hand in the brooder box they jump on the back of my hand and run up my arm. Every few minutes one will cause a ruckus by 'flying' across the box. I wonder how long I will be able to keep them contained! Coop building still in process.

Cooptopia, I see that yours are just a little ahead of ours. So we can see what to expect next! We are at York, SC just south of Charlotte, NC.

Thanks for sharing your pictures. Here is one more that shows the light and dark coloring better.

I know what you mean about coming to you. I have 3 other breeds of the same age that will "let" me pick them up with a little persuasion. But me Doms (especially this one) run right up and hop on my hand.

two questions. I am going to start incubating tomorrow. This year I added a computer fan in my incubator and also checking the temp with a digital thermometer. It seems impossible to keep it at 99.5. What is the acceptable range for temp?
I would also like some of mine to hatch there own eggs this year. How many eggs can a dominique successfully hatch at once? Is there any tricks to make them go broody or I just have to wait and see if they will on there own?

Has anyone had single combs pop up in a chick purchased from a hatchery? We bought 2 Dominique chicks and 2 Cuckoo Marans (all hatchery bred). I thought I would be able to tell them apart by their combs but three have single combs and only one has a rose comb. Are their any other physical traits I could use to distinguish between the two breeds?

At this age, the best way would be that Doms have yellow legs, Marans are white or pink. (and some marans have feathers on their shanks, but not always). Hopefully, the hatchery sent you three Marans, as a single comb Dominique is disqualified from showing and not desirable to use in a breeding pen. (though the eggs make swell omlettes)
