So this weekend we butchered 3 of our cockerels. 6 months old. They actually had a little bit of fat on them, I was surprised (must be all of the scratch grains

).

They were absolutely delicious and tender! I still have a hard time getting over how dark the dark meat is, though, and their thighs were very meaty! We used one of those baking bags w/ seasoning mix.

"Gallusfarm"- Thank you! He is quite handsome, but I doubt he is show quality (has too flat of a back I think and needs work on the comb). But don't let his looks fool you- he is a pistol! I'll try to post some other pics of him if I can figure out how. I have found that it is easier handling them at night after they go to bed and have had more success. It is still very difficult to catch them or handle them during the day. I have noticed that two of my hens are much calmer and easier to handle than my third, "Marge," who is very independent. Also, I think one or two of my hens may also have a slightly pinched tail-- that is interesting!

Funny that there is a "Privett" hatchery because my last name is actually Privett. I guess I chose the right breed for me, huh?

I am in Western NC (near Asheville) and i recently lost my dominique hen. She was my favorite! I love this breed. I am looking for someone nearby who breeds them. Anyone know of where to get dominiques near Asheville? Doesn't have to be a private breeder...any source is fine. Thanks!

Oh, my gosh, I think the Dominique mother load is near you. I'll check the ALBC directory and let you know-tons of listings in that area.

Well... This thread has now convenced me of the standard breed I want to get. I already have silkies & Ducks and im getting 25 meat productions, it's just I'll have a huge coop that is going to be empty in march, so im going to fill it w/ Dominiques!

Planning to do some pictures later today. BTW it wasn't the same bird that won both times it was two different birds picked by two different judges.

Are you going to be bringing birds/ Dominique to Ohio Nationals?
