Dominique Thread!

Very nice! I had read that report in #1573, but was curious of the breakdown of the genetics and how it was "looking". Always cool to hear about real progress!

Gary we are having our 2013 Dominique Nationals in Stockton this year - am I reading correctly that you are in Southern California? If so, try as best you can to come to the show (in January) as you could meet hopefully several breeders and see some birds in person.

We bought our first chicks, all Dominques, last week at 5 weeks old.

So far, I'm up to page 126 of this thread and haven't seen anything about how much they peep.

We have 9 chicks and from morning to night someone is always peeping, if not everyone.

Is this a chick thing, a Domique thing and will they always be this noisy?

Thanks!

It's a chick thing. They all do that.

Thank you, after seeing your post and looking up the word "chirping" on BYC, I see they all do!

I've been lurking for a year in anticipation and am happy to have my friendly chirpers finally here.

A lot of noise from chicks is a sign of distress. They should chirp when the hatch and then be pretty quiet. Make sure food and water are good and they are not too hot or cold. You want them sleeping in a nice little circle with the very center of the heat lamp's beam empty so they are sleeping just a bit outside of the center of the beam. Then you know it is warm enough for them they don't need to huddle under the lamp but not so hot that they all sleep outside of the heat lamp's rays. Also use a red bulb - a white bulb keeps them up and makes them noisier.

question about Dominiques eggs...do they ever get bigger?? My pullet is laying very small ones and I'n wondering if they will get any bigger as she grows up?? She is my sweetest hen, I'd love to have ALL doms, but if their eggs remain this small I don't think customers will want to pay the same price as they do for my big eggs.

Eggs for first month or so of laying tend to be smaller for young birds. If start of egg laying delayed, first eggs tend to be closer to normal sized.

Generally after a few months (2-4) their eggs should be about normal size, my Dominique eggs would be considered "Medium" or "large" from the supermarket, but not the xxLarge or anything like that. But yes, at first their eggs are small.
