. In the case of the Rhode Island Red, the brown pigment protoporphyrin, derived from haemoglobin in the blood, is what gives the shell its light brown colour.

The Araucana produces a pigment called oocyanin, which is a product of bile formation, and results in blue or bluish-green eggs.

Children are often fascinated to learn that you can rub off the eggshell colour if you get to the egg as it is laid and while it is still damp. Once dried, no amount of rubbing or washing will remove it. Some producers of brown speckled eggs prefer not to use wood shavings as a nest box liner because they smear the markings before they have a chance to set.

If I'm not mistaken here, the blue on an Ameraucana's egg goes all the way through to the inside whereas other colors do not penetrate the shell, leaving the inside white, no matter if the outside is dark brown. Someone correct me if I have misread it.

I think that boy in the original question has pink/white legs, right? This was a thread started awhile back and guess I need to read through the entire thing again. If his legs are pinky-white, he's a Cuckoo Marans. UNLESS he's a cross and got the leg color of the CM rather than the BR.

gee, it's been so long I forgot about this thread. ha ha Yes, I now know I have one rooster is a Cuckoo Maran, one rooster who is a dominique and four hens that are dominiques. I have no barred rocks at all. This summer has been quite an education for me and I appreciate all the advice from everyone.

It really has been a very enjoyable summer learning about chickens. At least, learning about the breeds I have so far. Thanks all!
