WHAT should be stopped? Ebay or mailing eggs or lethal aletes?

Ms Bird brain- I don't do anything different for shipped eggs. I do dry incubation for the first 19 days (because I'm too lazy to mess with the humidity) and then up humidity for the hatch either by moving to a hatcher or adding water.

I am hatching in two homemade bators made out of rubbermaid coolers with lightbulbs and waterheater thermostats - nothing high tech for sure...

I have always bought from folks on BYC except for one time if that makes any difference, and have always ordered from people in my own time zone for the most part.

Just lucky I guess so far!

Very lucky... hope it continues for you!

I use an LG with a turner, kept at 45-50% humidity (we're pretty dry here, like 20% most of the time), as well as homemades, too. Something about the way the eggs are getting here, then, because eggs brought up in checked baggage hatched WAY better for me.
I bet buying from BYCers is part of it, too...

I've had 4 Ebay purchases with shipped eggs and have had no less than and 84% hatch rate. Luck of the draw I guess. Also, I'm a bit picky with my bator...I even get up during the night at least once to check the temp.

Agree...I have had no problems with shipped eggs. Hatch rate at least 84%. My first hatch was the lowest because I think I kept the humidity too high. I do like you, Arlee...I pretty much dry incubate and then up the humidity for hatching. Much better results...

I've had one chick hatch from 3 separate Ebay shipments, but they are respected breeders and I trust them. I crack the eggs that don't make it, and 99% of the time the yolk has been scrambled and the aircell has been detached. But, there's an added step to getting PO stuff here, so it may just be different causes/problems for me.
Thanks for the insights, though... every little bit helps.

A few things I have noticed when buying eggs and having them shipped is that if you buy eggs that are west of you and are being shipped east, I have a better hatch rate. If they are to the east of me and coming west they dont hatch as well. Also North going south hatch better then south going north. Of course that doesnt help Mrs. AK-Bird since you are in Alsaska..

As far as e-bay I watch very closely what thier rating is and look through to see if anyone has added follow up about their hatch. I traded eggs with someone once and when I got my eggs 4 were broke and the box looked really bad. When she got the eggs I sent it was the same way and I really think the PO played hockey with the boxes. If you are really looking for birds you need to buy chicks. If you are looking for the experience of hatching then you have to take the chances. Jenn

Yep... I think I have enough "experience" now...

I'm going for chicks in the Spring to fill the gaps in my flock, and work towards hatching my own. BUT, I can almost guarantee 100% that I have the only Naked Neck, and the only red and silver grey Dorkings in the State, thanks to those efforts. It was worth every heartbreaking moment.

LOL, my sister gives me heck about having NNs in Iowa, she thinks it will be to cold for thier little necks in the winter. I will have to tell her about yours in alaska. You better start knitting a neck warmer for it.. Jenn
