Yes though technically Inbar is breeding stock & is a bantam. They crossed them with cornish cross to get their featherless broilers. They need less heat or cooling to keep them alive in a hot country like Israel & there are no feathers that need disposing of at slaughter time. Here's me with a broiler roo:

al6517 is surprised that the people who would advocate chickens indoors are not posting on this thread (aside from one indoor-chicken-lover). A year ago, there would have been a lot of people badmouthing everyone that doesn't keep chickens in the house. They seemed to have disappeared (maybe underground) or have left due to others hollering at them for how they choose to raise chickens. City people think raising chickens is the new cool thing to do but al6517 thinks that their desire to raise them this way is insane and that they must only do it to look cool and be current with what they believe is the newest fad. Supposedly sane people know that raising chickens indoors is not normal so to wait a few months, read this thread a few more times, and then decide. Good luck.

folks there seem to be a impass here. i say what ever floats your boat and you are comfotable with it hen go for it. in my expirence if it is breathing then it is shedding , humans included. think of what you shed a nite in your own bed. i prefer mine to have their own space, but that is what i was taught. if i was a caveman and they were between me and starvation i guess they would reside where i could keep close tabs on them.

Thanks again for all the support and ideas.

To clarify some things, our Greta that has been with us since hatching (early July) and her two friends - Annie and Robbie - who have been with us since August don't create much smell at all, in fact hardly any (they themselves don't smell and if I clean their cage every morning and put down clean shavings, there's nothing to mention at all). And it's not because I'm in any way used to it, because on the farm we have some that emit more smell (and I still love them dearly and would live with them if need be!).

As for dust, Malta is a dusty enough country already due to the dry weather (in summer) and rock (limestone), so my 3 chickies cannot possibly produce nearly as much dust as their is in the summer coming in from outside. At least I haven't noticed anything noticeable and they do bathe in the shavings. Of course they're still young and small, the oldest being 3.5 months old, but I believe they might just remain small (though I am not sure of their parentage).

I am not considering getting more chickens for the house or a different breed to keep in the house because I love these three and I'm doing it to be able to keep them near me, not just because I want a chicken in my house.

Basically, right now they live in a larger canary crate which they have clearly outgrown now, however it has worked fine for us except for the sawdust being thrown overboard during their activities. They have a perch inside and I give them yummies etc. on the floor so they do plenty of scratching and dustbathing in there and at night sleep on the perch. It seems to keep them perfectly happy and the best is when we have some time to sit down with them and let them out to interact with us in the kitchen/living room area.

The thing I want now is all the same setup just in a bigger version to have enough space for them. Just wanting to make it once again easily cleaned (e.g. the canary crate has plastic flooring).

Two dog crates is a great idea but the thing with inclement weather is you never know when it's gonna come. I want to be sure that when we're away for the day they are safe and protected from the sun OR rain and wind.

It seems however that we're going to move them to the patio as my partner can then build them a larger crate/run than for inside. (Although in my ideal house their coop would just be a natural part out our furniture!) And I'll be letting them out there when supervised or bringing them inside when I want.

Thanks again for the responses on this thread, I am sorry that I can't post an individual reply to everyone at the moment but I thank each and every one of the members for the comments. I love this forum!! (and my chickens!!)

Tiny Teena is a silkied serama. They do not tolerate cold weather very well so she stays in a large guinea pig cage on the counter in our laundry room. I wrapped three sides with a clear plastic table cloth and lay a pretty blanket on the top. Keeps 'floaties' contained very well. I spot clean every morning. When I let her out in the house, she wears her pants. Friends and family just shake their heads but....GRANDKIDS LOVE IT!!!
