Yes. They hide in the trees and then dive bomb onto prey. I have seen shows where they put a tiny camera on the head or back of a hawk to give us a true "hawk's eye view" and how stealthy and fast they can fly thru, not above, a heavily wooded area.​

I still think "Oh, cool! Beautiful hawk/eagle!!!" and I'd almost love to see him go into a dive and capture a chicken, just so I can see nature in action. Almost. Of course, there wouldn't be any of my birds I'd willingly sacrifice to get to see this show....

I didn't read all the posts and I'm responding anyway, even though I think it's about the rudest thing you can do on a forum, so forgive me if anyone has already mentioned this: I've done a little research since we got chickens, and discovered that many birds look like raptors when flying. Buzzards/vultures even draw their necks in close to their bodies so their outline against the sky is very similar to a hawk when in flight. Only when I was very close or got out binoculars was I able to tell what was actually flying around. Tennessee has a predatory bird website, and doing a search for predatory birds I found several good sites that even showed ranges, hunting styles, and dietary preferences. One site even had silhouette pics so you could compare what you might see from the ground. I discovered things like one bird prefers to hunt only in wooded areas whereas another loves dead trees or fenceposts out in clearings.

Be careful, but don't panic. Do some research and you can find out ways to make your property less appealing to predatory birds

no,we dont have hawks as a threat to chickens here,but even if we did do woud not see them as a bad thing as its just nature,hawk civilization is no way near as complex as human civilization is so they cant just wander into their local supermarket in their PJs at night for a tub of ben and jerries when theyre on their monthlies for example and they have to get food somehow,they arent being personal theyre just doing what their body prompts them to do.

have had many chickens slaughtered by foxes,and as difficult as it is knowing they came into their territory and did that to them,they do not have the same understanding or thought process as humans so cannot be treated as if they purposely targetted the chuck for thrills as some twisted people do.

I thought they wouldn't be able to attack through trees

I really do like preadtory birds. Those must have been voultures that I saw

My coop area is totally covered by trees too. I have seen a hawk sitting on one of my chickens and when I ran out to save it, the hawk would fly into the trees and "disappear". Very hard to see because of their coloration. I too, love these birds but not more than my chickens. I get soooooo mad when I lose one. I have fishing line strung from my coop to my fence. If you looked at my coop in an aerial view, my coop would look like it is in the center of a huge spider web. This has helped tremendously to deter hawks. But they do still try......

We have hawks around here - mostly Redtails. I was sitting out with my birds one day and one skimmed right through the yard at eye level. My birds are all Bantams so they are pretty easy prey. My big Silky roo is a good early warning device though. He will make this weird sound and send all the girls scurrying inside and right after that I'll see a hawk. He's a good boy. I had some of my chickens out in the yard the other day and saw a hawk 'next door' on the farm, which is still a ways away, but shooshed them back in the pen anyway (pens are covered). We have a Mockingbird that does a really good Hawk imitation, but doesn't fool the chickens - they know it's just the Mockingbird.

That mocking bird is sooo anoying, Ours does hawks, tries to do crows, and our phone ring.

People came by and cut down the forest around our house

So all the wild birds (including and big family of mocking birds) live in the trees on our propety. They all sound like birds of prey to me. They don't to the chickens they talk back and fourth its kind of funney

Apparently the one time that there was an hawk attack ALL the birds went crazy it was like a whole bunckh of alarms

I have also strung fishing line all over my coop I hope it works

. I have 1 pretty good sized live oak in the middle of my pen

I thought it would help because the birds of prey wouldn't be able to see through the top of the tree when all the chickens are underneath.

but apparently not good 2 know
