Wow! Ok - so I'm back at being stuck on stupid. How on earth did Tigger end up with wide lacing? Is wide lacing related to single lacing and are either related to double ?

These photos are AWESOME!. So what should I put Tigger on? I think he'll have brilliant iridescent maroon 'shoulders' + the wide lacing . Still don't how he arrived with this mutation-

I found this site that explains poultry genetics and mutations. Lots of info on colors, comb types, and other traits. It has some good photos of color and pattern genes with explanations on the genes that influence them.

Trisha thank you! This helpful but candidly I am such a visual person I really need to see the bloody things! I don't have the analytical mind that these geneticists have.
This is why I'm so in awe of all those that do- and then select breed for these traits. I've just been working on conservation of genetics but phenotype is primarily linked to genotype in the races I've been steward of all these years. I doubt I'll ever be able to jump onto that other ship but learning how it all works is so fascinating!
I hope that some of the other stewards working with some our foundation stock will learn all about the science of these genetics and participate in selective breeding for phenotype.

Some of these 'land races' we deal with hatch out in one of three or sometimes four different phenotypes- just colours primarily. A steward with a different skill set than me will be able (with experiential instruction) to delineate these different colour types and maintain them as such.

Birds that we are exporting to South America -well we will need to work out just what the phenotypes using the chicken calculator and assisting the conservationists down there in their breeding to these colour types as well. Again- not my skill set and fascinating all the same!

I love this site and stumbled across it a few months ago......copied and printed the entire thing out. It now sits right next to my keyboard for any reference.

tls~ I know I have told you this before but I must tell you again......those blue laced birds are beautiful!!!!!!! The whole reason I got the Barnies was to work on introducing blue for that blue lacing. Gosh that is spectacular!
