The only problem with using sardines is they draw aniamals in that would not normally be there, I use eggs as bait in my traps as I have cats as I do not want to keep setting traps releasing cats an a opposum or raccoon that walks by can not resist the egg. It is not hard making pens cat proof but it is hard making them weasel proof and I have not lost a bird to a weasel since having cats but do loose a few cats to coyotes

little blue an i will give you our pied peachick this fall if you want just pay for shipping an the bird is free.we just need to wait till it cools down a bit an it gets a little bigger it is about 4-5 weeks old now.debbie loved his color so she keeped him to raise with the white she has.

I am so sorry for your losses,

I live near an area that people would think that they could re-home their predators, as well as dump their unwanted house pets.

How absolutely maddening if those two working in tandem had been re-homed to your area. I don't think they naturally know how to break into pens and gain access
or to even know that pens = food. But, I could be wrong, maybe the Raccoons in the wild are raised with mom making wooden cages to demonstrate the ability.

When you first told us that Dragon was killed, I did a search on the internet and there was a newspaper article about a MN mans caged peacock getting killed by a predator. Maybe
you could get an article in the local paper about Dragon and Pip and the trouble your having, or at least let the local authorities know about it, and maybe they could look into to see
if your local "predator removal" people are re-homing them to your area.

Yes raccoons will sleep in hollows in trees too. They are great climbers. In fact coon hunting, which my dad used to do a bunch of and win a ton of trophies for, is basically getting a few dogs, releasing them into the woods, then the dogs pick up on the scent of a raccoon and chase it up a tree were the dog stays at the base of the tree and barks. You then have to go into the woods (normally coon hunting is at night) and find the dog by following the sound of the barking. Then you shine a light up in the tree and look for glowing eyes and then shoot the raccoon out of the tree. That is coon hunting.

So I have a question...I am still planning on free-ranging Alto and Damsel today, Ice will stay in the small pen and it will be closed off from the large pen. We are going to chicken wire the little pen Ice is in and the fencing is already pretty small at the bottom so it is pretty good for chicks. She should hatch them soon, we still are not sure if soon is today or when but there should be chicks if the eggs are good which hopefully they are. My dad said that he is not sure about peafowl but in the wild if turkeys are attacked in a tree by a predator they will fly away even at night and not land on the ground they will just fly to another tree to roost. Will peafowl do that? The trees at my grandma's are huge. They are really tall and when I free-ranged Ice and Fire they would get to the very top on what seemed like very small branches and sleep there so I think the peas can be safe enough. At least they will have a huge amount of space to escape predators. Hawks won't kill adult peafowl right? We have several hawk pairs that live in the yard but we enjoy them so we don't scare them off. The largest would be the redtail hawk pair. It is storming right now and later I am going to the beach with our youthgroup for our work days kick-off so I hope the storm clears out soon so I can release the peafowl and add on to the small pen. I think we have Pip as bait now. I think my next post will be the raccoon pictures...

no you can have it i really only like the white one and we have a silver pied chick too that our peahen is raising and the white one will become friends with the silver pied when we put him in the coop
