DRUNKEN hens!!

With newly hatched chicks it takes two weeks after the shot for the vaccine to become effective. That means that for the first two weeks they can't be with older birds who might carry the virus.
Conversely, if the hens get shots and the chicks hatch before the hen is protected, they need to be separated until the hen is in the clear.
As I said, with babies it's two weeks. Maybe someone knows if the absorption rate in a hen is different.

I'm new here but I had a two of my nine week old Rhode Island reds acting like this also and was told it's COCCIDIA -THEY WERE ACTING THE SAME WAY
mine don't have the bloody droppings but i was told get them on Sulmet or Cordid right away....got the cordid 20% and got them on it yesterday-they say it's fast acting and not as many side effects as sulmet...we'll see i guess...here's some symptoms i copied and pasted..

Coccidiosis is seldom seen in birds under three weeks old nor in birds older than three years.
The signs of an outbreak include birds that are pale, droopy, tend to huddle as if cold, consume less food and water than usual. They have diarrhea and often become emaciated and dehydrated. Laying hens with Coccidiosis will drop egg production

here's a link for the Cordid you can get a Tractor Supply-different brand but same drug and same concentration and the fact that NOBODY and i mean NOBODY has Sulmet I can find anywhere- I called about a 60 mile radius and it's all gone...

anyone PLEASE feel free to tell me if i'm an idiot but I talked to several local people very experienced with chickens...

not sure how to put pics here so i'm trying two ways to see what works better....please bear with me...this is the coop i built for them....works pretty good and is portable so i can move it around the yard easily by putting it up on the wheels in the mroning when they're up in the roost and set it down and they have a fresh and clean area....

GREAT INFO HERE!! exactly what my birds were doing...just got back in from checking them and both appear to actually have a little more life in them this morning...how about yours FLCHICK? how are they doing??

http://www.firststatevetsupply.com/poultry-health/coccidiosis.html

Some of the symptoms that you may observe during an outbreak of Coccidiosis are as follows: Ruffled feathers, droopy or sleepy eyed apperance, birds may drop one or both wings, birds may become lethargic and reluctant to move even when prodded. Some birds may show an incoordinated gate or appear to stagger or walk as though they are trying to step over something when there is nothing in front of them. Some birds may have a chilled appearance as well. There may or may not be blood in the droppings depending upon the species of Cocci that is affecting the birds. Weight loss as well as loss of appetite and mortality may also be observed.

Yeah, some of those symptoms in your last post are right on. I have a Tractor Supply not too far me, so I will get the Cordid too. I wonder what would happen if you vaccinated or treated a bird with something they possibly didn't have. My theory is better safe than sorry...more might be better.

Love the tractor you built, it is super cute. That would be perfect to use for any chickens I needed to separate from the rest of the flock. You should sell those in your area, like put them on Craigslist. They would be a hit for sure!!

I have a question, I got my chickens from a local tractor company they are from a hatchery do they vaccinated against Merks(sp) if not should I do it now I have 10 hens and 4 babies (10 weeks old) and one rooster who has been vaccinated what should I do since I am not sure if they are vaccinated or not.

As for the feed store chicks being vaccinated you probably need to call the store and check with them. Whether they can really tell you is a question.

I'm probably wrong about this, but in regards to the mareks vaccination I was under the impression that it should be given to day-old chicks to be effective, that giving it to older chickens won't hurt them but probably won't help them either being as there's a very good chance that they've already been exposed.

Here is a pdf file put out by Hy-Line. It is focused towards the commercial producers but it explains a bit about Marek's. Hy-Line Marek's PDF .

Best wishes,
Ed

I'm glad your girl is ok

Horses act this way when they have west nile virus, nerological problems, their feet and body don't work as one giving them a tipsy appearance, as long as their immune system is ok they can mostly come out of it or even completely, I'm not sure how birds handle it though I know there are wild bird deaths but surely they can survive too.
With mosquitos being out it's a possibility.
Hope all is well!

OK-SORRY BUT BACK TO THE SUBJECT--

FLCHICK-how's the girls doing? the Cordid seems to be at least giving them some more life back...i was also told you HAVE to make sure that you don't feed them medicated feed and the Cordid at the same time as the medicated feed also has the same ingredient as Cordid and it can get to a toxic level.....as far as the tractor i got the plans from a guy on eBay and he has a site -I have to look it up- it's called a chicken stagecoach something or other but the plans were great-as far as the build it took quite a while but it's VERY sturdy and I'll bet it lasts a long time but it was too time consuming and expensive to profit from them.....

found the site- I think his plans are cheaper on ebay by about 5 bucks and he just sends you the file download site as they are big PDF files

super nice guy though and helps you through the build process if you can't get some materials locally to "field engineer" things
