Hi everyone,
I’m a first time duck egg mum and really need some advice. Can you help me identify if the membrane is too tight around this hatching duckling? I’ve moistened it with coconut oil and can see it seems a bit leathery in texture. It externally pipped at 2pm yesterday with help as had been on the 24 hour mark of internally pipping. (currently 9am in Uk now) but is really struggling to move side to side or up and down. Chirping away, trying to move but no luck. Nibbles air frequently and yawns so I think is absorbing yolk still. Do you suggest I GENTLY peel any of the membrane away from him? Only his bill is out. I really don’t want to intervene unless I have to :(
What’s your advice about the membrane?

How is it doing?
Still no further unfortunately :( I think it’s wing is tightly packed around its bill. It stretches its bill out, really goes for it to reach out or move it from side to side but then pings back. Hasn’t been able to free itself. I have been remoistening the membrane through the day with coconut oil so it doesn’t get too dry. I can see a little way down the egg and that membrane is looking white and dry. It’s only been 24 hours since external pip now. It looks like the blood vessels are receding. Still a very active duckling. Any advice on when to step in? 🥺

Can you offer advice for a duckling hatching issue?
Updated photo - made some progress, a toe is sticking out but concerned the membrane around it is looking pretty leathery. Duckling is still very active, chirping and pushing. We’re 28 hours on from external pip (which I had to assist with)

I had a smashed egg under a broody and used this article to assist it. Maybe you can find it helpful as well.
Are any other ducklings hatching?

Ah yeah I read that this morning! That’s when I decided to coconut oil up the exposed membrane that was dried out. Duckling just kicked another bit of shell away , I noticed the dried membrane further inside the egg (white and papery) was stuck on its skin so gently moistened so it would lift.
I hope it doesn’t cut itself pulling this dry membrane off its skin when pushing. Dry membrane is very tough to break through, trying to sit on my hands!

My other egg died this morning :( it was always going to be slim that one living as it developed in a very odd manner. It just about internally pipped, when I went to check on it 3 hours later, it had stopped moving and was cold. It’s beak was totally wrong place, not even near the narrow end of the egg :( so sad.
