It will be my first time hatching eggs. So I was not expecting to get all of them to hatch. But only 3 or 4 out of a dozen eggs for $55.00 would be difficult to be happy with. I may give it a shot anyway and just see what happens. Maybe I should hatch out a few eggs from my Araucana Roo and Wyandotte Hens first to make sure my homemade bator will do the job. Then order expensive breeder eggs....Hmmmm got some thinking to do. Thanks for the input!

I would buy his chicks rather then his eggs. There's been a few post in these forums saying his hatch rate is kinda low on eggs. People say out of 10 eggs only 3-4 will hatch.. I can't say, never bought his eggs but that's what few people said.

3-4 eggs to hatch out of a dozen shipped eggs would be fairly normal numbers, no matter where the eggs come from. The post office is brutal to shipped eggs. People who get more than 4 to hatch after the post office has had its way with them have been lucky. Eggs can arrive with damaged air cells and broken yolks no matter how carefully they have been packed. Post office does not ship temperature controlled so eggs can be frozen or baked.

Shipping eggs is best reserved for when it is absolutely the only way to get rare birds that you must have and are wiling to pay for..

Hmmmm not liking the sound of that. He does sell chicks...but I have to order 25 and they are $7.00 each. And most of them I will not get to keep. Unless I get the new coop built I only have room for 5-6 more hens on the roost. I may need to wait a few years and get my coop built...hatch out some eggs from my Wyandotte hens and Araucana rooster and get some experience hatching eggs before I put in the investment on shipped eggs. Thank You for all the advice. I appreciate it.

Maybe you can find someone to share with? Or let them grow alittle then sell them on craigslist.

Yes I would have to do something like that. Or learn to eat my culls. Last time I got too attached to them so I could not butcher them. They went to someone who was going to butcher them and I was Ok with it, but just could not do it myself. After I felt it was a HUGE waste of my money!

Yeah I can't do it either.. My father will kill anything so I let him do it. You could also sell them at a livestock auction to make some cash if you have one of those near by.

for hatching shipped eggs, IMO anything over 20% hatch rate is good... so if you got 4/12 that's 33% and doing well.

if you don't like that kind of $ per chick, maybe ordering chicks would be a better bet. That's what I'm planning. I love hatching eggs, but tired of thowing away shipped eggs every time.

maybe you can find someone nearby that will split the order with you... I've got 2 people locally who are going in with me on an order so we can split the shipping costs.

I was supposed to get HRIR Bantams. Some other people also special ordered chicks and didn't get those either, however out of 50 chicks (25 LF and 25 Bantam) only 3 died. I was very pleased with my Cochin Frizzle Bantam I got from him last year. Hopefully these Cochins will be just as great.
