Yes, I have read so much about the difference in quality that I decided to buy more chickens. I telephoned Mr. Urch and then followed the call up with the written note and check for $193
8 white Jersey Giant
6 Buckeye
6 Australorp
5 silver penciled Wyandotte

Nice choice of breeds, good thing you asked for white Jersey Giants instead of blacks one cause it would be hard with the Australorps to see who is who since Urch has black only.. When did you request your chicks to be shipped around?

Cool! I am sure you will be pleased with the Buckeyes (have not ordered the other breeds, but no doubt will be pleased with those as well), the Buckeyes I've gotten from Mr. Urch have always been very nice indeed.

Once they've grown out, if you decide to stick with the breed, mosey on over to the Buckeye breed thread here and join the fun: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/271644/buckeye-breed-thread

And of course, we have a breed club for them: http://www.americanbuckeyepoultryclub.com/

Congrats!

I visited the Buckeye thread yesterday and will visit again, I spotted your photo and noticed your entries since you had commented on one of my remarks when I was considering ordering from Mr. Urch

what are the other breeders (or lines) you have used and when or how soon should I look for other roosters so I do not inbreed?

My wife and I are returning to our home in MO (north of Kansas City) after living in western NC for nine years. the move is taking place late April or very early May so..... I scheduled my hatch date of May 20 which is the last date for Mr. Urch this year. Worked out perfectly for my move. We have already built a coop so everything is ready.

anyone in sw va want to go in on an order to save on the shipping? i want 25 chicks minimum possibly 50 but would need someone else to join me for the other 25 or 50. 8) that's the best savings per chick is shipping on 100. but hubby said he'd divorce me if i ordered 100 LOL

If you order a mix assortment of his choice the chicks are pretty cheap. That would save you some money

I think you could get birds from any of a number of other breeders at this time and be able to "braid" them in with Mr. Urch's birds just fine. Many top-notch breeders are working with birds that have his bloodlines in them, so they'd "nic" well with his birds. Off the top of my head I would suggest contacting Chris McCary, Bob Gilbert, Don Schrider, Melody Hobbs, Marci Kerley, Trish Dusil, or any of a number of folks on the list here at the ABPC website: http://www.americanbuckeyepoultryclub.com/Breeders.html

I found your thread on Mr. Urch. I have told many of my friends who ask me for very rare breeds to act fast on getting birds from him. I have a source in Minn that tells me he is getting up in years and we dont know how many more years he will be able to perform this task. Many of these strains he has goes back 30 to 50 years he has some from a old sting man named Henry K Miller who was the last of the great string men from the 1960s.

Those Brahmas in Canada look nice. We just found a very nice strain of Silver Pencil led Rocks up above Maine on a Island. Now it may take two to three years to get them into the USA.

I would love to know where he got his Welsummers from!

It's sad to see someone like him "retiring" from breeding and showing birds. Its a very long time doing this. At least he has made a dent in the poultry world for years to come.

EweSheep I got some of his welsummers a few weeks ago. I usually sell chicks to 4-Hers, but do you think that I should keep some of them.

I don't know for sure honestly. I've got mixed reveiws on the Welsummers of his, directly or indirectly. ALL you can do is to grow them up and take pictures of them and we can give you some honest feedbacks on the flock.
