D'uccle Thread

It does seem like a lot when it's written out, but the projects and goals tie together nicely.
I figure I won't have competition if I don't promote the breed. And since there aren't many d'Uccles in my area....

The colors just happened.

I didn't intend to get the blacks, but if you could've seen Ronnie's birds... well, it's a wonder I didn't come home with more!

FL may be out of my range this year, especially if gas stays the way it is. But I have thought about finding a show near my sister's house (St Simon's Island area) because I could bunk with her and visit my niece at the same time. If that happens, I'll definitely give you a head's up! Although that still may be too far for you to drive and I certainly couldn't bring ALL of my showbirds.

I dearly love my Brinsea. Once you get to the temp you want, it holds it like a dream. And it gets back to temp very quickly, so opening it to pull a chick or add hot water is not a big deal. I'm now using mine as the hatcher, and setting eggs in my Brower. I thought about getting another Brinsea, too!

I don't want to use the hens to set at all this year. Broody-raised babies are more wild, and it's harder to check on type and development. So I'll be strictly bator this year. Plus, when one goes broody they ALL go broody, and no more eggs during the peak season when everyone else wants some (hint hint).

If your mom wants to visit Sevier County again (Dollywood, Gatlinburg, etcetera) please let me know. Then you can come by and meet everyone in person.

I like what you said about promoting the breed. Most people have absolutely no clue when I tell them what type of chicken I have. Which is fine. But to go to a State Fair and see them poorly represented, that was disappointing. They are such a unique breed. A few years ago, I decided that instead of having a bunch of mixed breed bantams running around, I wanted to focus on one breed only. I looked up all the types of chicken breeds out there, and the d'uccles won it. So then I went to buy some, and I could not find them anywhere!!! I had to search high and low. So glad to have this website (and this thread) to keep us in close contact.

Glad Brinsea gets approval, waiting on convincing myself to buy one.

I looked up St. Simon's and that's far but not too far if you can find a show, and maybe if you had a decent hen or roo for sale or to trade out to bring along with you, that would really perk my interest!

Thanks to all for sharing pics of babies...so cool!

Oh, your project chicks are adorable! We have been blessed with 3 new "kids" and the one mystery egg is going to be a standard cochin cross. Eh, what ever, the more the merrier! So far, this is what we have;

Oh, how cute! Lori you mentioned that Ron had stated the Gray d'uccle was a recognized color variety, which has almost been lost. I LOVE the gray color, but don't see anywhere where anyone is raising that variety. How would you get a gray, and is anyone raising grays?

Now you are all still teasing me with the chicks.
Still waiting for some D'Uccle, Leghorn, Pheonix, Polish, Runner Duck eggs.
The Faverolles, EE's, Comercial Lohman browns, and Silkies are laying again.
I only listed out the projects for the D'Uccles but as you can see we have lots of things to keep me busy.

In June My daughter and I are attending a breeding and showing seminar with two judges that was arranged on anouther board, I was considering taking citron to see what they think of him.

On a side note, purely poultry has a picture of a booted bantam on their d'uccle listing, but then mentions how belgian bearded bantams are often confused with booted bantams. How ironic. No wonder people are confused! NO BEARD and HAS WATTLES = BOOTED BANTAM. Should we say something?
