D'uccle Thread

yes that's TRUE. I wouldnt use her on a show quality male either, UNLESS, that's all you had to breed with. In which case, follow what I said in my last post, select for best feathering as well as type and color and continue to work toward your goals. I do it all the time in creating new colors in the breeds I work with. There's absolutely nothing wrong with improving a line as long as you have goals to shoot for.
Like the above post said, that all depends on what your goal is. If you just want some nice birds for your own personal enjoyment, well you have those. If you want breeder and show quality then you definitely need to follow their out line above and just find some nice quality to start with. The beard and ear muffs should be thick and full with little to no wattle visible. The feet should have a very thick base of feathers and should be pretty long as well.

One problem with getting good color on millies and other mottled birds, the color and pattern continues to improve ove the first year drastically, and even into the 2cd year, so early culls based solely on color type can be difficult. Personally I never cull any mottled bird for color til their second year based on LACK of mottling, now if they are heavily patched in white, that usually doesnt go away, so a young bird covered in white can be culled.

What you need is a good buff to mahogany buff base, then each feather is supposed to be tipped in a black chevron ( a V) then tipped off in white for millies and porcelains. Obviously the black will be blue on a porcelain. For black and blue mottled you obviously cant distinguish the V but the white tip should form a good point as it goes down into the feather. Spots dont count for high quality ones

For the ones wanting to see what boys and girls look like, I snapped photos tonight of my house babies. These d'Uccles are 5 weeks old now. You can certainly see the boys from the girl in this photo. Boys on your right, girl on your left. Those combs have been prominent for a few weeks but I sometimes notice them when taking from the hatcher. I try not to look. I am always afraid of a lot of boys and I usually always get them!

I am fairly new here and love my d'uccles also. I have several different color phases. I have a trio of golden neck, a trio of self blues and a pair of blue mille fleur. I also hve sevral others that are more of singles. I have two blue mille fleur cockerels. A golden neck pullet that is alsmost completely white. A mille fleur cockerel and a self blue rooster that has very large waddles (witch makes him just a booted bantam) I think. Thanks for letting me share and hope you enjoy!

They are soooo cute. My 8 eggs will be locking down tomorrow. Porchia, gave my 8 eggs and stopped laying. I saw the post about breeding the black mottled with the Mille and I hope my Black Mottled turns out to be a girl. Can you get the darker spangles if bred to a female mille with good dark spangles? I bought two girls at the Ohio National and want to put them in with Mr. Boots, in a couple weeks. (their still in quarantine, with my beautiful new White Ameraucana Bantam Pair.
