D'uccle Thread

he looks pretty good to me i cant really see the foot feathering on him though

I'd like better feathering on hs feet - of course I want the foot feathering of your blue roo

I guess my plan is to breed my boy to the hens with the most foot feathering and see if that helps.

Any other magic anywhere to produce the feet that everyone seems to want now? I read the standard and it says "plumage, outside toe and outside of middle toe covered"

I guess that is "adequate"?

choose hens that have the best foot feathering that you are looking for...my blue boy is actually from ideal hatchry

he also free ranges with those feathered feet. when i got him his foot feathers looked horrible but since then they have gotten way better and nicer.
would say try and order some pullets from them BUT as you can see my boys wattles are way to big and with yours thats a risk i wouldnt be willing to take if its only the foot feathering that you want to better on him(wouldnt risk bringing in the large wattles like mine has if you bought hatchry plus possable other down falls) find a breeder with some nice d'uccles to offer and go from there

I'm thinking about ordering some white d'Uccle chicks from Ideal, when they have them available. If I do I think I'm just going to keep some of the best pullets I get and then get a good white roo from a breeder later this year or whenever I will need one(I think that will be the challenging part because I think it might be hard to find one). I was going to breed another breed but decided to get another color of d'Uccles instead since I like them better than any of the other breeds, lol. I love their sweet personality's.

I have a flock of 'pure' Black d'Uccles but not any eggs available until spring. The random eggs I've been getting from Big Momma, the oldest Black hen, are finally fertile, though!

A longtime breeder told me that there needs to be a touch of white on black birds to keep the feathers glossy green. Mine have it on their feet feathers, just the tips, which (so far) have always broken off before a show.

I have one show-winning roo in with 5 show-winning hens. Will post pics on the sale page when I finally have eggs available in spring. But as long as our temps keep dipping into the teens, my girls will be withholding eggs. And the rare eggs I get from Big Momma on warm days I am hatching for myself. I'll either keep the chicks or take them to sell at the Newnan GA show Feb 18th or at the Knoxville TN show (can't remember the date).

I do have 2 black pullets from my project crosses that have a touch of white on featehrs all over their bodies. Not full mottling but more of a tracing of white on those lovely black feathers. Type is perfect, though! I had planned to sell them before now, but didn't make it to the most recent shows in the area. Not sure if they will throw mottled or not, as they have a touch of MF & Self-blue in them, as well as Black.

They do seem to be rare. I had a heck of a time finding a new black roo that was good type. He is unrelated to all my hens, too

Hey everybody, I'm new here and already addicted! I've learned a lot just reading a small fraction of the posts and have a few questions. I am sad to learn that wattles are supposed to be almost non-existent because my three roos all have them. My question is: How hard is it to breed these wattles out? I also am wondering about breeding "mutt" colors. My three roos are full brothers from a mille fluer pair, but they are each a unique color: one mille, one black mottled with gold bleed through, and one gray mottled with gold bleed through. Should I even breed the mottled roos, or will the chicks colors just get more and more muddled? I have a ton of different colored hens and am not sure who to pair with who. I wish I could post some pics, but I guess I'm not allowed to yet because I'm a newbie. Any help/advice would be great!

10 posts and you will be able to post pics! I don't see why you can't breed them as project birds, and go from there! if you plan on selling any of the chicks then let the buyer know what they are getting. I am raising some chicks now and am going to use them for a project breeding. I have only a few color but I have a handsome Roo who is a cross of two different color types, but he is looking more and more beautiful every day, I plan on making more like him and breeding him to my Mille pullets to see what comes of the chicks! Their is no crime in experimenting. who knows you may become the breeder of a new and very well loved color of D'Uccle. Just keep in mind the wattles, and all the other breed standards. Happy Experimenting!
