D'uccle Thread

I am kinda new to d'Uccles and I have a question. I just bought 3 pullets and only 1 has a beard and she has a lot of white coloring. The other 2 have what I consider normal coloring for Mile Fleur but no beard. The questions is should I use them? My roo has a beard and was hoping he would pass that to the chicks. I am just not sure about the color of the one. I am not breeding to show... I them just cuz they are cute.

L., that is amazing that it could take that long for a toe to show up. I am so new to all of this but learning so much here ! Thank you
We got our first D'uccle's in 2008 so excited to have the colors I have now. And others on the way :) !! My Mille Fluer was so very beautiful, my main buddy. He was beautiful to me, but then I do not know all the little good things and bad things :) Can not wait to watch them grow, just wish they were a few months old really quick - tee hee !

Hope you find your answer Donna:)

No beard can mean booted bantam, or that they have someone in the group that preens the beard away. Is there a bare patch?
Are you sure the one with a lot of white is truly a pullet? Millies gain more white each time they molt, so if there's a chance she's an older bird then I wouldn't worry as much about the white.

Booted bantams are frequently bred to d'Uccles to gain better traits, and then offspring are kept based on whether they have a beard or not. That's why sometimes a d'Uccle can throw a booted, and vice versa. So I'd breed them and select for color & d'Uccle traits if there are no other mature birds available in your area.

Seriously, 2 PERFECT show-quality parents can throw nothing but pet quality babies. And 2 pet-quality birds can throw really nice, type-y babies. I've had a lot of discussions about this with longtime breeders. You just have to keep your eyes on the offspring and choose wisely in who you keep to breed later. Also remember that it usually takes a full year or more to see all the traits in a d'Uccle and know who is worth keeping.

I would say no since the pullets don't have beards and that's a big part of the breed....also the coloring is to...so big that they are named after their color pattern. I culled hard in the beginning for bad beards and bad color.

Easier to start with good stock than try for years to breed up. That's what I was told at the Fair by the experts :)

I will get pictures and you tell me. I just don't really know what I am looking for at all in d'Uccles. The whiter one could be older... I didn't ask and she didn't tell

I will have to go back and look through this tread and see what they are supposed to look like. I got my trio from my neighbor and she has more. I don't think they are hard to come by here... I have never really looked.

Thanks

I just wanted to post some updated pics of what I believe is a self-blue d'uccle (please correct me if I am wrong) at about 2 weeks old. I just can't get over how cute he/she is and just had to share! It hangs right in with the standard size chicks even ruling the cage at times. Can anyone tell yet if i have a pullet or roo?

Which to keep........

So if I have it right P X P =F-1. Teddi these are from your birds. the colors are all over the place with these two. I have a Porcelain boy I want to put her with along with a couple of girls from this hatch. i have two unrelated Mille pullets that one of these two boys will get as mates. So what do you think? I'm going to see if I judged them the close to the same way. Thanks, Michele

Looks like a pullet to me.

I vote to wait and see. It looks pullet right now, to me, but I've had some that surprised me.
And when I had d'Uccles & standards together, the d'Uccles always ruled ;)

Is # mf roo molting or young or holding his tail funny? It looks a little short.
If he's young or molting, and hasn't finished growing in his tail or his colors, then he's my favorite based on these pics alone. #1 doesn't have enough black and #2's white patch bugs me. Are any of those chest featehrs all white? If so, that's a dq for showing.

Look at your pullets and see what flaws you think they have. Pick the male that has opposite flaws.
