D'uccle Thread

My babies are starting to feather nicely, here is the Penguin. Does anyone else think this could be a Blue Mille? I also have Mille Fleur with nice feathering starting. This is Angel since it is so sweet. A nice Blue Mottled. I'm now going through the hatch to see who will stay and who will be sold. So if I want to show some of these biddies, what do I need to do to keep the foot feathering nice, How would I house them. I would love to show at Ohio National Poultry show in November. Can someone tell me how to go about to start showing.

I have shavings in the coop and sand in the runs. Mine get to free range when I can supervise (due to hawks & dogs). I feed mine leftovers, especially grease mixed in with dry oatmeal. This gives the feathers a nice shine! I feed mine Flockraiser or Gamebird feed, for the extra protein, to aid in feather growth.

Check the ABA website and see if there is/are some shows in your area. Entering your birds in a smaller show or 2 will help you & them get used to the process and gain some experience. I wouldn't let the Nationals be your first show, or theirs, unless you had no choice. They'll show off better if they aren't scared.

Wen you go to your first local show, look around for an older man or lady who is standing back and watching the action. Walk up and strike up a conversation, letting them know that you are new to showing. If this person can't help show you the ropes, they will probably know someone who can.
If you don't see a person like I've descrobed, look for someone in a oultry club shirt who may be a volunteer helping to set things up. Ask them if they can assist you, or help you find someone who can.

Unless they are incredibly busy, most people are very hapy to help show a new person the ropes. They not only want you to have a good time, but they also know that new peeps are the future of the hobby.

Depending on the rules for your state, you will either need to get your birds tested in advance, or tested at the show. Testing involves drawing a few drops of blood from the underside of the wing. This is stressful for the birds and one of the reasons I am NPIP certified. NPIP breeders can show their card and not have their birds tested at the show. Testing from a show is good for 6 weeks, so if you time it right you can get your birds tested at one show and not need another test for a show a month or so later.

Quote: Thanks, I will check around and see if I can find a show I can enter. My flock is tested, I did this once I wanted to work on them. I love them. The Blue and Black Mottled colors where hatched from Pampered Poultry, Candance has some nice birds. The Mille Fleur I bought in Columbus last at the Nationals. They are throwing some nice babies, so do you think the second picture, looks like a Blue Mille? If you look on my gallery, I think the picture will enlarge.

Mstricer and Lady Chickadee, what an awesome variety of color you guys have! I love watching then get older and change with new feathering. Lady Chickadee, in the second picture of the trio, the chick that is furthest to the right has a similar coloring to one of my silkie cochin crosses. The feathers on her neck are silvery on the outter edge and black in the middle, I wonder how that color turns out.....

I'm not sure about the blue mille. The ones I've seen before looked an awful lot like regular millies when they were younger, and then the blue became more clearly identifiable. He's a pretty baby, though! If he had more gold in his shoulders I'd say blue millie, for sure.
