Hope everyone is able to keep their birds cool & comfy, if you're in the hot zone this weekend!
I've been watering down the sand in their runs, have tarps covering the runs, and put a fan in one window to help the attic fan pull out hot air and create a breeze. We're at 104 now, and the inside of the coop is under 95 degrees. Not great, but it could be worse! The birds are panting, but alert. At sunset I will feed them some scraps that we're keeping in the fridge. A cool treat before they go to roost.
Got my Poultry Press today and saw my boy's photo in there, from the May 19th KY show. It's my biggest award, so far!!

Thanks!I do, and that's my plan. I can't take full credit though, it was WeGotChickens suggestion![]()
Thanks!
Best part was finding out I was essentially correct
Thanks for the info Jaboo. And a lovely little man you have there, indeed. What do the hens looks like? Do you have a picture?
all of mine tend to choose boards over rodsWhat size pole, dowel, or board will my d'uccles want to roost on? I have not been able to get them to roost at night in their coop but they fly up to my outdoor furniture and roost on it when they are out during the day so I know they are able. I had a dowel in the coop, maybe the diameter is too small? They didnt like it and sleep on the floor of the coop cuddled up. I dont want them to sleep on the floor i dont think that is right, but wonder if that is how this breed is? These are my first chickens so I have no idea. Would they prefer a platform of some kind instead of a dowel rod? Help pleasethank you!![]()
I don't use rods at all. I have 2x4's laid so that they can roost on the wider 4" side. However, given a choice between the broad side of a 2x4 or a platform, mine ALWAYS choose to sleep on the platform. And they do so all cuddled up, even in the summer....all of mine tend to choose boards over rods
