Doug, I know exactly what you mean about the self-blue and the poor quality rooster tails! I'm facing the same thing, as well as young birds that don't feather in as fast as I would like them to. That's why I crossed my MF roo, who has a gorgeous tail, with my s-b hens.
And since no one answered me when I asked if the roo or hen held the genetics for feather quality, I added in s-b roo x mf hens chicks as well.
I have 22 of the cutest little black chicks you've ever seen! One of the older chicks, a cockeral, is getting some very even white mottling on his chest.
I also have a couple of pure lavs in them for comparison in feather development.
And I have 9 goldneck chicks and 2 millies in there too. I'm overflowing with d'Uccle cuteness right now
I try not to be too proud of them. It seems like I always lose my favorite birds
I entered my Goldnecks and some of the Mille Fleurs in the TVA Fair September 10th. I hope there are other gn there as well. I would really like to see how my cockeral compares. I think he's gorgeous, and now that the hormones have settled down he's becoming a very good caretaker. He even chased off a cat yesterday!
Poor Fuzzy is no threat, and they were all raised around her (she's the coop mouser), but I was still glad to see that he got between Fuzzy & his girls, then made sure Fuzzy moved away from them all.
I've been lucky in regards to hawks. The chickens only free-range when I'm right there with them, and the runs are completely enclosed in 1/2" hardware cloth.
Plus, our resident female hawk was rescued and rehabbed by me, so she and her mate tend to stay away from our place. She was released in the backyard, and I think she's afraid I'll try to 'help' her again if she gets to close.
For the trip to Europe, DD's band trip to Rome, Italy may not happen
But I talked it over with DH, and I will take DD to Europe in 2011 whether it's as part of a school trip or on our own. Either way, we will try and see a European poultry competition. I will
and DD will
even though she will secretly be drooling as well.
So my next step is to see who I can find that breeds awesome birds and has/ is willing & able to get the APHIS vet clearance. I cannot see paying $300+ for shipped eggs. But now that I know there are currently no restrictions for hand-carrying them I'm excited about the possibilities!
